CABT 118 Using Microsoft Windows (Vista)

This class is designed for people who are beginning computer users, or who have some experience but want to understand Windows better. Listed below is an outline of the weekly topics and assignments (subject to change). More detailed information, including assignments, will be posted once the class begins.


 Week 1: Introduction to the course, Reviewing Mouse Skills, Using the Vista                 Desktop

    • Course Outline, Syllabus, etc.
    • Turning the computer on and off, logging on and off, mouse skills
    • The Vista Desktop: Start Menu, Taskbar, Sidebar and Gadgets, etc.

 Week 2: Disks and other Removable Media

    • Working with windows
    • Understanding storage media
    • Disk capacity demystified
    • Using floppy disks, USB flash drives, CD and DVD media

 Week 3: Learning About Files and Folders, Organizing and Protecting                             Information

    • All about files and folders
    • Better Searching
    • Burning to a CD


 Week 4: Using Windows Vista Programs

    • Notepad and WordPad
    • Paint
    • Calculator
    • Copy and Paste; Clipboard


 Week 5: Customizing the Desktop

    • The Control Panel
    • Customizing the Desktop
    • Ease of Access center


 Week 6: Browsing with Internet Explorer

    • Features of a web browser
    • Browsing web pages
    • Searches--finding what you want
    • Working with Tabs
    • Favorites--keep track of good sites


 Week 7: Computer Security Issues

    • Security Settings and Privacy
    • Web browser issues: cookies, etc.
    • Windows Firewall
    • Protecting from spyware and malware
    • Protecting from viruses


 Week 8: Digital Photos and Music

    • Importing pictures

    • Using Photo Gallery

    • Printing and emailing an image

    • Windows Media Player: add music to your library, create a playlist, burn a CD
