RECONSTRUCTED MISSISSIPPIAN
VILLAGE STOCKADE
A restored section of the log stockade at the Mississippian site of Aztalan,
Wisc. After the stockade logs had been placed upright in the ground, mud
and grass were plastered on the walls. The finished sides looked like cement.

This is the way the restored north wall of Aztalan appears today as it
extends downward to the banks of the Crawfish River. In 1984 during a drought,
Dr. Richards, an archeologist, discovered that 40 acres of ridged gardens
had been used outside this wall. Note the platform mound just inside the
lower right corner of the stockade.
