ANTH 2
PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
You will be responsible for a 20-35 minute group presentation (50 pts)
on one of the following topics (you can choose your own subtopic, but
please clear it with me first). Don’t feel you have to cover
everything there is to know about your subject—instead, focus on
specific case studies or a specific point of debate in order to
expand on, enhance, and/or complicate other course material.
On the day of your presentation, prepare the following to hand in after
class:
a. your own topic notes.
I expect to see at least one full page (typed, in a standard 10-12 pt.
font with 1 inch margins) of important points you intend to bring up in
class. Do NOT simply xerox pages or download material from the
web and turn that in—I want to see your OWN summary of the material you
find most relevant/interesting.
b. your own reference list.
I expect you to use (and cite) at least TWO good references (if you use
internet sources, be sure they are reliable; if you interview someone,
be sure to clarify whether they are providing an emic or etic (expert)
point of view.). See attached guidelines for the proper format.
I expect everyone to take equal responsibility for the project,
although you can divide the labor as you wish. For example, one
of you might prepare flashcards or a poster, one prepare and distribute
handouts, one introduce the topic, one moderate student questions
during class discussion of the issue, and one deliver concluding
remarks. Or you might set up a group debate—most of the
presentation topics are highly controversial, and should lend
themselves easily to a debate. You might also prepare visual aids
like slides/transparencies, bring in video or audio tapes, or perform
skits highlighting the complexities of the assigned topics. BE
CREATIVE, and please let me know well in advance if you need a slide
projector, cassette player, or other such equipment.
I would suggest exchanging phone #s to facilitate planning, although I
will give you at least some class time for group meetings. I am
also here to help if you have questions or run into problems—just ask
(but be sure not to wait until the last minute)!
