COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

A study of marketing concepts as they pertain to business operations. This course will introduce and analyze the marketing mix and marketing strategies.  The course will provide general information on marketing research, target market analysis, consumer behavior and promotional campaigns.

 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

1)         Introduce students to the general functions of the marketing mix

2)         Analyze and develop solutions for marketing problems.

3)                  Apply the principles of marketing research.

4)                  Develop an understanding of segmentation and promotional strategies.

5)                  Understand consumer behavior and marketing impact on it.

 

 

TEXTBOOK: Marketing, The Core. By Kern, Hartley, and Rudelius. First Edition, McGraw- Hill Publishing.

 

Suggested Reading:  The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, & Business Week Magazine.

 


ATTENDANCE:

 

Regular and prompt attendance is required in this class, just as it is in the business community.  **Students who are absent will miss class participation, attendance, and assignment points.

Your attendance is crucial to your success in this course. You will be considered absent if you show up following roll call (usually within the first fifteen minutes). You will be penalized a letter grade for any four unexcused absences during the semester. Please do not disturb the class by coming late or leaving before the class is dismissed. Please exercise proper etiquette

 

METHODOLOGY:

 

This course will consist of lectures, classroom discussions, practical project and case assignments.  Other materials such as videos, outside reading, etc., will also be included in this course.  In addition, Corporate Project will supplement the book as a practical "real world" activity.   

 

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:

 

There will be no make-ups of any kind.  All assignments and exams must be taken at the time and date they are scheduled.  Only excused students (excused by the professor) can turn in late assignments.  The excuses must be obtained from the professor prior to the assignment due date.

ASSIGNMENTS:

 

All assignments are accepted on the due date only.  The assignments must be typed.  Late assignments will not be accepted.

 

 

GRADING CRITERIA:        360 - 400          =          A         =          90-100%

                                                320 - 359          =          B          =          80- 89%

                                                280 - 319          =          C          =          70- 79%

                                                240 - 279          =          D         =          60- 69%

                                                Below 240        =          F          =          Below 60%

 

You are always encouraged to discuss your grade standing in this class.

 

 

 

 

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

 

Last day to withdraw and receive a grade of "W" is 3/6/04.  Students withdrawing after 3/6/04 will risk the chance of receiving an "F" for the course.  This instructor has the discretion to grant a grade of "W" or "F" to those withdrawing after the mentioned date. .  Students maybe dropped from class for being consistently absent without an excuse. However, dropping a course remains your sole responsibility. Last day to request the CR/No CR option is 3/13/04

 

 

CLASS EVALUATION:

 

In order to continuously improve the quality of instruction and to deliver the best service to you, your ideas, suggestions, opinions, and concerns are welcomed at all time.  However, you are required to turn in a typed evaluation twice a semester to insure and improve quality.  Your comments are due before mid-term and following the third exam.  I appreciate your participation in improving the quality of education.  It is your choice whether to include your name or not on the evaluations.

 

·         This syllabus is intended to be a guideline for students.  Typographical and any obvious errors are not binding.

·         The instructor has the discretion to change the syllabus to fit Cabrillo College requirements.

·         Students are encouraged to discuss any concerns that they may have with me.

 

No eating, sleeping, or snacking is allowed in the classroom.  Drinks are allowed but you are responsible for your mess.  No beepers or cellular phones to be operated in the classroom.
