Problem-Solving in a
Medical Office

name_________________________
In today's workworld, it is expected that employees are both computer and information literate.  That means that employers want you to be able to use computers to accomplish basic office tasks (e.g., wordprocessing, scheduling, use of spreadsheets).  They also want you to be able to solve information problems using electronic resources.

This exercise will give you practice in information problem-solving, using a computer and the Internet.

Professional Associations

PROBLEM  Someone in your office got a flier about a forthcoming meeting of a professional association in which they are interested.  You find a note on your desk when you come to work asking you to find the Web site and email them the Web address.

YOUR SOLUTION  You use Internet search engines to identify the professional association's Web site.

Optional -- If you have Web-based email, send your instructor the Web address you found.  [Go to Getting a Web-based Email Account if you don't have Web-based email and would like to have a free account.]

Most professional associations have Web sites with information about the organization and its activities.  You will want to be familiar with how to identify and access these Web resources.
  1. Read carefully through the section below "How to Use Internet Search Engines."
  2. Following directions given below, go to where Internet search engines are listed and described on the Cabrillo College Library Web pages
  3. Using one or more of the search engines, find the Web addresses for three of the associations and explore something special offered on that site
1. How to Use Internet Search Engines
Internet search engines, unfortunately, don't all work in the same way.  However, in the ones you are going to use in the assignment, the following search parameters all apply:
  • Use quotation marks (" ") to keep words in phrases together
  • If you want the search engine to recognize a letter as a capital, capitalize it.  Otherwise, use lower case
  • Use a plus sign (+) in front of a term to require it in the search result; use a minus sign (-) in front of a term to disallow it in the search result. NOTE Plus signs are not required in the search engine Google; Google automatically puts an AND between the terms you enter in your search statement
2. Getting to a list of Internet Search Engines
  1. Be on the Cabrillo College Library homepage   http://libwww.cabrillo.cc.ca.us  (If you are at an information workstation in the library, just click on HOME at the top of the screen)
  2. Click on Search the Internet
  3. Click on Search Engines
3. Select one or more of the following search engines to use for this exercise
  • AltaVista: simple
  • FAST Search
  • Google
Select three of these associations (check the ones you select).  Find their Web addresses.  Spend some time exploring the site, and note down a feature on the site you find interesting.
___American Academy of Professional Coders
___American Association of Managed Care Nurses
___American Association of Medical Assistants
___American Medical Billing Association
___American Physical Therapy Association
___Health Insurance Association of America
___National Association of Claims Processing Professionals
