Sabbatical Summary

The objective of the sabbatical was to assess the information literacy needs of students in selected occupational programs, to gather data from real-world job sites, and to develop instructional module prototypes that can be used to improve Cabrillo College's efforts to prepare students for the information access and information management demands in today's workplace.

The strategy was to collect information from real-world worksites, and to investigate Information Age needs and requirements, all with the purpose of improving the college's information literacy efforts.

Once involved with the activities associated with these projects, some additional interests developed. These were:

  • To investigate information literacy efforts at various educational levels (high school, lower division college, upper division college) so as to better understand how they supplement and support each other, and to assess student information skills at the various educational levels. See Investigating Information Literacy Efforts.
  • To look into the overlap between computer and information literacy skills. See Information Literacy
  • To research at least two fairly specialized areas of interest
    1. Knowledge Management (the current term that covers information access and
      management in business)
    2. Nursing Informatics (the current term that covers information access and
      management in nursing)

Each of these areas of interest is discussed in the appropriate section of this project write-up.
