Just Released: A New Video "Pathways to Archaeology"
The video introduces the viewer to many of the skills field archaeologists use: survey, research, excavation, soils analysis, wet and dry screening, processing and analysis of artifacts, publication of findings. Using the voices of students from the Cabrillo Archaeological Technology program, the video also explores the course work, field work and professional contacts that move students into the world of employment. Retired professionals, UCSC graduates, CSUMB and regional Community College students, join Cabrillo students in field classes that survey and excavate prehistoric and historic sites from the Big Sur coast to the San Francisco Presidio. Their voices are blended with those of professional archaeologists and who discuss the significance of archaeological work and education on the world today. Ever conscious that archaeology involves the history of peoples still part of our community, Rob Edwards, director of the Cabrillo Arch. Tech. Certificate program, emphasizes the ethical responsibilities of today’s archaeologist. His message is in counterpoint with that of representatives of local Native Californian families.
The video, produced by Edwards with Firelight Films of Santa Cruz, is being distributed free to schools, libraries, and non-profits, and can be seen on the web as streaming video at www.archaeologychannel.org. It is also being shown intermittently on Santa Cruz’s public TV channel 27. A brochure that describes the Archaeological Technology program is available on line at www.pathwaystoarchaeology.org. For information on any of the above, contact Rob Edwards at Cabrillo at 831 479-6294 or at Redwards@cabrillo.cc.ca.us.
