Data Entry on Computer CABT 103A
Distance Education Course Requirements

Course Description:

CABT 103A is a beginning data entry class designed to teach you proper techniques for computerized data entry. Recommended Preparation: CABT 110A and 110B (computer keyboarding). The Data Entry computer program allows you to learn at your own pace and simulates common business and government data entry systems. After completing CABT 103A you may enroll for the advanced data entry course, CABT 103B.

How to Enroll:

  1. Complete advance or walk-in registration, or if adding later in the semester, obtain an add slip from an instructor in the Cabrillo College computer lab (CTC, building 1400).
  2. Submit the add slip to Admissions and Records and pay your fees.
  3. Complete an orientation during the first week of classes. Times are in the Schedule of Classes. If you miss an orientation, talk to a CABT instructor in the CTC. Students may enroll up to the 12th week of classes.

Student Expectations:
Expect to spend 14 - 35 hours of lab work, sometimes more, depending on individual experience and aptitude. Expect to complete at least one lesson a week and show your progress to the instructor. Prior keyboarding experience is recommended; those who have not had keyboarding experience should consider taking the Keyboarding courses CABT 110A & 110B.

Text:
Data Entry - Concepts and Applications, Third Edition, by Buzby and Locke, ECM Paradigm.
Diskette: You can purchase a floppy disk for $1 at the CTC to have the data entry software copied by the CABT instructor once you have purchased your textbook. All of your work will be saved on the floppy disk.

Grades:
This class can be taken on the regular grading system (A - F) or on a Credit/No Credit basis. Notify the instructor by the 5th week of classes if you want the CR/NC option. All work must be completed before finals week. An Incomplete grade can be assigned only if you have completed 75% of the course work to passing standards, and an illness or emergency prevents you from completing the assignments. To receive a Withdraw (W) grade, you must officially withdraw by the 12th week of the semester. You must have had at least one assignment scored by the instructor by week 12 or you may be dropped from the course.

To receive credit (CR) for the course you need to:

  1. Complete 3 open-book quizzes with 100% accuracy (Pick these up from your instructor; make sure to check your answers with the answer key located in the CTC)
  2. Key data with 99% accuracy
  3. Show your Instructor or Lab Instructional Assistant in Cabrillo's Computer Technology Center your summary screens upon completion of each lesson. Note: once you have shown the summary screens in person for your first two assignments, it is possible to e-mail your data file for the remaining assignments to your Instructor

All work must be completed before finals week!
