Computer Keyboarding CABT 110C - Speed Development

Distance Education Course Requirements

CABT 110C is a self-paced keyboarding course designed for students with previous keyboarding training to increase speed and accuracy by 10 words per minute (wam) with no more than 1 error per minute (epm). Students must already have attained a minimum of speed of 30 words per minute (wam) with no more than 1 error per minute (epm). It is a self-paced class, requiring self-discipline to complete the computer-based exercises. There are no regular class meetings. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 1.5 hours a week and complete at least one lesson a week. Students may enroll up to the 12th week of classes.

Grades:

This class is offered on a Credit/NoCredit basis. You can receive 1/2 unit if you pass the course, but your grade will not affect your grade point average. This class may be taken four times. All work must be turned in and timed writings completed before finals week.

An Incomplete grade can be assigned only if you have completed 75% of the course work to passing standards, and an illness or emergency prevents you from completing the assignment. To receive a Withdraw (W) grade, you must officially withdraw by the 12th week of the semester.

To receive credit (CR) for the course you need to:

  1. Establish your entry speed (at least 30 wpm with less than 1 epm).
  2. Complete the MicroPace Pro lessons as indicated in the Student Progress Sheet handout. The timed writings must be completed with one error per minute or less.
  3. Turn in progress reports as required (See the Progress Sheet handout). You will need to print out your progress report and drop it off at the Cabrillo College Computer Technology Center for your instructor, or (for internet users) you can attach the report to an e-mail for your instructor (cabt@cabrillo.edu).
  4. Increase your entry speed by at least 10 wpm with a maximum of 1 error per minute for three final 5-minute timed writings as assigned by your Instructor. You must take the final timed writings in the presence of your Instructor or Lab Instructional Assistant, in Cabrillo's Computer Technology Center. You may not look at your fingers while keyboarding!
Text: 121 Timed Writings, by Clayton, South-Western Educational Publishing/Thomson Learning, 6th Edition 2000. If you are planning to do some of your work in the Cabrillo computer lab, there are a few copies available for check out to use while you are there.

Software: MicroPace Pro is used for timed writings. You may purchase a copy of the MicroPace Pro software at the college bookstore to install on your own Windows-compatible computer (not compatible with Apple computers). You will need to bring a floppy disk to the instructor to have the MicroPace Pro timed writing exercises copied so that you can copy these onto your home computer. The programs are also available in the Cabrillo computer lab.

Turn in your work: To your instructor at the CABT desk or to the instructor's box in the lab. It is also possible to e-mail work to your instructor by attaching your Performance Record to an e-mail message to cabt@cabrillo.edu.

Pick Up Your Work: In the class folder in the file cabinet. Ask instructor for location.

All work must be completed before finals week
