Computer Applications and Business Technology logo Data Entry Software Instructions

For CABT 103A and CABT 103B

Data Entry, 3E Concepts and Applications, from EMC Paradigm.
(Software does not work with Macintosh)

Once you have purchased the textbook Data Entry Concepts and Applications, Third Edition, by Buzby and Locke, published by EMC Paradigm, a CABT instructor or staffperson can copy the software onto a floppy disk for you. The software runs under DOS within the Windows environment.

As you work on the Data Entry assignments, or "jobs," keep in mind that for each job to be "A" level, your goal is to complete the work with 90% accuracy or better for the first 9 jobs, and 99% accuracy or better for jobs 10 - 18, with three "attempts" or fewer. Each time you open the job, or use the "Validate Input" screen to fix your errors is counted as an "attempt." That is why it is a good idea to allow yourself enough time to complete each job in one sitting. If you get interrupted halfway through, and need to close your session, you can use your second "attempt" to return later to where you left off.

  • Running Software
    • Put the floppy disk into your computer's disk drive.
    • Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your computer's desktop (usually located in the top left corner of the screen).
    • Double-click the "Floppy Drive A:" icon.
    • Double-click the icon for "Entry.exe." This will launch the Data Entry software.
  • Creating your data file
    • Once the Data Entry program opens, the mouse will no longer work. You will need to use your keyboard for every operation. Strike the spacebar to move from the first screen to the second, and once more to get to the third screen. You will see the question, "Where do you want to store your work?"
    • Using the arrows on your keyboard, and your "Tab" key, highlight "-A-" and "new." (See below).

      Creating Data File 1

    • The field for the name of your data file will now be active. Type your first name, and press "Enter."

      Creating Data File 2

    • The word "New" changes to "Create." Press enter again, and you will be prompted to enter both your first and last names. Use the "Tab" key to move from one field to the next.
    • Strike your "Enter" key after typing your name. Strike "Enter" again to indicate that your name is spelled correctly, or "Tab" to select "Change" if you need to make corrections. The Data Entry main menu will appear, and all of the work you do during this session will automatically be saved to your data file on the floppy disk.

      Creating Data File 3

  • Opening the Data Entry software the second time
    • You only need to create the data file the first time you work in the Data Entry program.
    • Each time you open the data entry program, follow the same steps as above, only when you are asked, "Where do you want to store your work?" you will see your name at the bottom of the list in the data entry window. Highlight your name and strike "Enter."
    • The main menu will again open, and your work will be saved to the data file with your name.

      Selecting your data file

  • Doing a Practice Session
    • Please read through the instructions for each job before you begin your practice session. The value of doing a practice session is that you get to see what is expected from each job before you begin working on it. Your practice sessions do not count as one of your "attempts."
    • From the main menu, use the arrows on your keyboard to make sure that Job #1 is highlighted. Use your "Esc" key to access the menus at the top. Use the right arrow on your keyboard to highlight the "Practice" menu. Strike "Enter" to open the menu. Use the down-pointing arrow on your keyboard to choose "Accuracy" and strike "Enter".

      Practice Menu

    • You will have about a minute to practice typing the data displayed in the bottom half of the screen into the empty (purple) fields in the top half of the screen.
