For CABT degrees and certificates:
The CABT Department Academic Program Director, with the advice or recommendation of a keyboarding instructor, may waive keyboarding requirements. Procedure for waiving CABT keyboarding requirements:
- Student requests that their instructor give a written request to the keyboarding instructor, asking for a keyboarding test.The keyboarding instructor may assign typical timed writings to assess speed and accuracy. A printout from the keyboarding program, signed by the instructor, can verify the student's level of skill.To waive a CABT keyboarding requirement, the student must submit the signed verification to the CABT Academic Program Director for a decision.
- If a requirement is waived, an approved elective of equivalent or greater unit value must be completed by the student to receive a CABT Department Certificate or Degree.
For degrees and certificates in other programs:
- The CABT Department cannot waive requirements for other programs.
- Students must contact the appropriate faculty or Academic Program Director in that program to discuss the possibility of waiving keyboarding requirements.
Challenging Keyboarding Courses for Credit
- It is not possible to challenge keyboarding courses.
Completing Keyboarding Courses for Credit
- To receive credit for keyboarding courses, students must enroll in the appropriate course and pass requirements to the instructor's satisfaction.The following requirements must be met to pass each course listed below:
- CABT 110A: Student must achieve a speed of at least 25 words per minute in three two-minute timed writings with no more than one error per minute.CABT 110B: Student must achieve a speed of at least 30 words per minute in three three-minute timed writings with no more than one error per minute.
- CABT 110C: The student works with the instructor to establish the current typing speed through the completion of several timed writings; to receive credit in the course, the student must increase typing speed by 10 words per minute by the end of the term, in each of three five-minute timed writings. If the student has NOT received credit for CABT 110B, the minimum speed the student must achieve is 35 words per minute (maximum of one error per minute). If the student has previously received credit for CABT 110B, the minimum speed that must be achieved is 40 words per minute (maximum of one error per minute
Keyboarding Tests - Documenting Keyboarding Skill at Cabrillo
- Enroll in an appropriate level CABT course. Contact keyboarding staff or faculty if you have questions about your current level of proficiency.Printouts from the keyboarding program, signed by the instructor may serve as a documentation of proficiency.Students completing CABT 110C may request a keyboarding certificate.
- Cabrillo College does not provide keyboarding tests for non-Cabrillo students.
