Online Project for Computer Applications/Business Technology (CABT)

Purpose To demonstrate proficiency in using the Internet to search for quality resources to apply to specific business problems.

To complete this project, you can use computers in the Computer Technology Center (Building 1400). Call first to check for hours (477-5286). Lab computers have Word, Excel, and offer access to the Internet.

If you are totally unfamiliar with the basics of using the Internet, you might want to explore resources offered on the Internet and Library Instruction page. Librarians in the Library can also offer assistance to the unitiated.

Two ways to do this project.

1) You can print out this project and fill in your responses in ink. If taking this option, put your name and the date here:

name______________________ date_______________

OR

2) If you are working at a computer that has simultaneous access to the Internet and to word processing, you can open a word processing document, put your name at the top and date it, and type as your heading: Optional Project for Business Office Skills and Technology. Label each Activity as you type up your responses.

Activity 1

You work at a business here in Aptos. Your boss wants to write a message to this area's Congressional representative in Washington expressing an opinion about recently proposed legislation. Who is your representative? What is his/her email address? Does he/she have a Web page? If yes, what's its URL?

YOUR SOLUTION
1.Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage. The URL (Uniform Resource Locator -- Internet address) is http://libwww.cabrillo.edu

Don't know how to do that? To open a new URL, highlight the current URL at the top of your screen (where it says Go To, or Net Address, or Location) and type in the new URL. If you are at one of the Information Workstations in the library, click on HOME towards the top of the screen to get to the Library homepage.

2.Click on Internet Links
3.Click on Government: United States
4.Under U.S. Congress, click on Congress.org
5. Type in your ZIP code (where it says Enter ZIP Code, towards top of screen)

[If, by chance, the main Web page for Congress.org doesn't work, try this, their Web page for identifying elected officials.]

Activity 2

Your boss informs you that she has a forthcoming business meeting in New Orleans Nov 26 and 27. She'd like you to research the following:

1) AIR FARES -- she'd prefer to fly in and out of Monterey, CA; she wants to arrive in New Orleans on the 25th, and fly back to Monterey as late as possible on the 27th.

2) CAR RENTALS at the New Orleans airport -- she tells you that a compact or a subcompact is fine.

What can you find out for her?

YOUR SOLUTION
1.Go to the Cabrillo College Library homepage.
2.Click on Internet Links
3.Click on Travel A variety of Web resources are listed. Expedia Travel and Travelocity are well-respected, and both offer airline fares and car rental information.

Activity 3

Ms. Boss is beginning to really look forward to the trip to New Orleans. She'd like you to explore river boat cruises and other sight-seeing adventures that await her.

You'll want to impress her with good information! What can you find?

YOUR SOLUTION

To get good information for your boss, you'll want to find a good article, and also be able to direct her to some useful Web sites.

For the article -- From the Cabrillo College Library homepage, select Fulltext Articles and look for fulltext newspaper and magazine articles, by selecting EBSCOhost or ProQuest. [If you are accessing these resources from off-campus, your library card number is your user ID.]

Print out at least one fulltext article for your boss. Attach it to this project worksheet (or your word processed sheet).

For the Web sites -- From the Cabrillo College Library homepage, select Search the Internet. Using Google, enter search statements such as:

"river boats" "New Orleans" "sight-seeing" "New Orleans"

When formulating search statements, be sure to put quotation marks around phrases to keep the words in those phrases together

Web sites for your boss. Write down complete URLs, and a brief description:
