Online Project -- General

Purpose To demonstrate proficiency in using the Internet to search for quality resources to apply to specific information problems.

To complete this project, you can use computers in the Computer Technology Center (Building 1400). Call first to check for hours -- 477-5286. Lab computers have Word, Excel, and offer access to the Internet.

If you are totally unfamiliar with the basics of using the Internet, you might want to explore resources offered on the Internet and Library Instruction page. Librarians in the Library can also offer assistance to the uninitiated.

Two ways to do this project.

1) You can print out this project and fill in your responses in ink. If taking this option, fill in your name here:

name_________________________ date_______________

OR

2) If you are working at a computer that has simultaneous access to the Internet and to word processing, open a word processing document, put your name and date at the top, and type Optional Project. Label each Activity as you type up your responses.

Activity 1

You're in college, and in the Cooperative Work Experience Education program, but you've found yourself having some doubts about your chosen field. You'd like to explore a bit to see if there are careers for you out there you've not yet considered.

YOUR SOLUTION
Go to "What Can I Do with a Major In...?" from Career Services at University of North Carolina.

Explore what is offered, and summarize below what you learn:

Activity 2

Career choices are important. There are skill sets that we have from work and school, and skills that we plan to acquire. You'd like to get a better notion of what skill sets you already have, and how these might match up with occupational fields.

YOUR SOLUTION
Go to O*Net Online Click on Skills Search. Follow directions on the screen. Did you discover occupational fields that match your skill sets that you'd not previously considered? Did you discover anything particularly interesting by doing this exercise?

Activity 3

A fellow worker and you were talking about how different you are from each other. She prefers order above all else, and you'd rather get ahead with things right away despite the mess. Someone mentions that there's a "temperment assessment tool" available on the Web that measures these kinds of things. You'd like to know more.

YOUR SOLUTION
The "temperment assessment tool" being referred to is the Keirsey Temperment Sorter. The Keirsey may help you understand some aspects about your preferences and your temperment. It will not give you "answers" about yourself, but only may suggest clearer ways of picturing yourself. Everyone is different, and personality temperments compliment one another. You may become more aware of this as you do group work or participate in teams.

Take the Keirsey Temperment Sorter (you have to supply some information about yourself initially). Allow yourself 20 to 25 minutes (might take a bit longer) to complete the questionnaire. Print out the results. Note down here something you believe you learned about yourself as a result of doing the Keirsey. (If you believe that the Keirsey "got you all wrong," tell us that as well!) P.S. The Keirsey is free; when you finish and get your free report, they will offer to sell you additional information for a price, but you don't have to buy it.
