Purpose To evaluate your progress on the job, based on the competencies employers look for in employees, as identified by the U.S. Department of Labor's SCANS Report (Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills).

Required Project Components [2 parts]:
Journal: Write a DAILY journal of activities at your work site. The daily journal can be handwritten in a "diary" format, or typed and saved on your computer. The date of each entry must be noted. The journal might include your actual job functions; observations you make about your work, work site, co-workers, and supervisory personnel; new directions the company is taking; or personal growth opportunities for you as an employee. Keep tuned into your tasks and what's going on about you.

Final Summary Report: Prior to the due date, re-read your journal entries and write a summary report evaluating your job experiences based on the SCANS criteria listed below. Additional requirements for the report:

  • Typewritten or computer prepared
  • Cover page -- your name, your CWEE class and section, your CWEE Instructor's name
  • Minimum of three pages [not including cover page]; report format [double spaced; use 12 pt. font, maximum margins 1" top, bottom, left, and right]
  • Short introductory statement/paragraph describing the company, its services or products, and your job. Remainder of document answers the questions listed below.
  • Attach your daily journal (original or copy)

SCANS Criteria

Resources How did I allocate my time, materials, and equipment to completing the tasks I was assigned to do?
Interpersonal skills How did I contribute to the success of the company in working with others, participating in discussions, and understanding the diversity of people's backgrounds?
Information What new information and skills did I acquire, and how can I transfer this knowledge to future situations?
Basic skills What opportunities did I have to progress in my reading, writing, math, speaking, and listening skills?
Thinking skills How did I think creatively, solve problems, or troubleshoot situations to benefit myself or the company?
Personal qualities How did I accept individual responsibility, exhibit self-management, socialize, increase my self-esteem, and build integrity while working?


Required Project for Repeating Students - Semester 2, 3, or 4

Purpose
To expand your knowledge in your area of occupational training through research.

Activity Talk with your WE Instructor and select a topic of research to benefit you in your chosen occupational field. Look at Checklist for students for due date.

Prior to the due date, research and write your report. Feel free to consult with a librarian about your research, either in person at the library's Reference Desk, or email Topsy Smalley at tosmalle@cabrillo.edu [Topsy is a college librarian working with Co-op]. Additional requirements for the report:

  • Typewritten or computer prepared, font size no larger than 12
  • Cover page
  • Minimum of five pages [not including cover page]; report format (double spaced; use 12 pt. font; maximum margins 1" top, bottom, left, and right)

All CWEE 99G students must complete all the requirements for either first semester or continuing students listed above. In addition, based on the discipline of study, students must complete the following requirements:

  1. Write a research report
  2. To complete an expanded reading assignment
  3. Present an overview of your work experience learning objectives, activities, assignments, outcomes, and evaluation to an appropriate group/audience

Specifics of all the above will be developed with the student's Work Experience Instructor and work site supervisor.


Project Paper Option -- ECE 199

Purpose To demonstrate competence in the area of Early Childhood Education Curriculum, including planning, implementing, and evaluating developmentally appropriate activities, designing emergent curriculum, and assessing and evaluating the environment as a curriculum tool.

Activity Create a Portfolio of curriculum activities for small and large groups of young children that reflects knowledge of developmental differences, facility with environment design, and the ability to assess and evaluate one's own work.

The Portfolio should include the following:

  • Two written descriptions of small group activities
  • Six activity plans and evaluations for curriculum in the following areas
    • Art
    • Science, sensory or cooking
    • Large motor, music, or movement
    • Language
    • Circle time
    • A repeat or follow-up activity
  • Environment change in the class - include plan and evaluation
  • A personal evaluation answering the following questions:
    • What are my strengths in the area of curriculum, and what have I enjoyed the most?
    • What have I learned about curriculum?
    • What do I still need to work on?
  • (Optional) Photos documenting curriculum, environment, or student interaction with children

The Portfolio should be typewritten or computer prepared. It should have a cover page, and an introductory statement describing the classroom assignment (i.e., which classroom, number of teachers, and ages of children enrolled).
