When's the deadline? How long is the wait? Do my courses meet your requirements and other Frequently Asked Questions. Cabrillo does not honor any recency requirements on prerequisite courses nor do we have a annual applications deadline. We do accept applications all year long with a new class beginning each summer.

Admission Process

Please read all information contained on this page for applications, selection and admissions processes.

Receipt of your application does not automatically guarantee placement in a class nor does it guarantee acceptance into the program for any specific year. Summer applications will receive information in October.

Applications are accepted all year around and placed on the placement list, oldest date first, based on the postmark date issed by the post office. You will be invited for training when space becomes available. The average wait time is two to three years once applications are reviewed and determined to be qualified by a counselor. After the application has gone through this verification process, you will be notified, through the US Mail, of your application placement on our wait list. We will be informing you of your status on the wait list several times through out the year. Please do not call the department for information on your placement in any specific class.

The Dental Hygiene Application consists of a total of four (4) pages, a two page Application for Admission, a one page Student File form and a one page Acknolwedgment of Performance Standards. All four pages are mandatory and considered part of your completed application. If any of these pages are not included, your application will be considered incomplete.

You can fill this application out on line, print, sign and mail it in into the department with official sealed transcripts documenting all prerequisite courses; or print and complete by hand with all transcripts. Application must be complete and mailed by certified mail, return receipt requested and will not be accepted in person. No exceptions. To obtain a copy of the 4 page application please click the "Download Application" link above.

Applications received in the department will be time/date stamped and applicants will receive notification that the application was received in the department by mail. After they are evaluated by a counselor, to determine course equivalency, and whether the application meets the required criteria, all applicants receive notification of application status indicating if their application is qualified or not, basic reason why not, approximate placement number, and the estimated graduation date. Applicants are invited for training when space becomes available and the average wait time is two to three years.

Program Prerequisites

Due to the rigorous demands of the program, we encourage you to take the general education courses prior to entering. If you have questions about these courses click here or their equivalent, please contact the dental hygiene counselor at 831.479-6274.

Health Requirements

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for Health Care Workers are extensive and the entrance requirements for the program can be confusing.

Physical examinations, immunizations, background screening, and drug testing are required to attend clinical internships. The cost of the required physical examinations, immunizations, background screenings, and drug tests will be paid by the student. Students accepted into the program will be provided with specific details.

Performance Standards

Due to the attendance requirements and stamina demands on the dental hygiene student, there is a great need to be in good physical and mental health. The needs of our patients require us to have each student meet specific criteria. Please review the Performance Standards (.pdf) which, list the essential eligibility requirements for participation in the dental hygiene program.

Felony conviction, Background Checks and Drug Testing

Positive results on background checks and drug tests could impact a student’s ability to attend clinic, complete the program requirements, or gain a license to practice upon graduation.

Dental hygiene applicants who have committed a felony may not be eligible for licensure after completing the program. All dental hygiene students are fingerprinted prior to taking the state licensure test.

Applicants who have committed a felony should call the California State Board of Dental Examiners to determine their eligibility to take the state licensure examination.
