Program Prerequisites

The following is provided as a supplement to the current college catalog or schedule of classes but is not meant to replace complete, current and or accurate information. Due to the rigorous demands of the program, we encourage you to take the general education courses prior to entering. Below, you will find very brief descriptions of courses required to successful achieve an Associate in Science degree in Dental Hygiene. If you have questions about these courses or their equivalent, please contact the dental hygiene counselor at 831.479-6274.

All prerequisite courses must be competed and the grades documented on official sealed transcripts before applications can be submitted and considered complete. No "In Progress" grades are accepted.

 

Dental Hygiene Prerequisite Courses

CHEM 30B Intro to Organic Chemistry & Biochem for Health Occupations
Survey of the major classes of organic and biochemical compounds as they relate to the chemistry of life processes. Prerequisite: MATH 154; high school chemistry or CHEM30A or CHEM 2

BIO 4 Human Anatomy
The gross structure of the organ systems of the human body is covered through lecture, demonstrations and dissection. Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in BIO 201. Recommended Preparation: MA 170A and MA 170B

BIO 5 Human Physiology
An exploration of the functions of various anatomical systems and their underlying chemical basis. Prerequisite: CHEM 30A. Recommended Preparation: BIO 4.

BIO 6 Intro to Microbiology
A survey of microbiology covering cell structure, growth, metabolism, inheritance and control of microorganisms with emphasis on bacteria. Prerequisite: CHEM 30A

ENG 1A or 1AMC English Composition
Students write a minimum of 6,000 words with an emphasis on the expository essay and research paper. Prerequisite: Assessment or ENGL 100 with a grade of "C" or better and ENGL 100L or ENGL 115. Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in LIBR 10

 

General Education Courses

The following course is only offered and must be taken at Cabrillo and must be completed before graduation. If this course is not taken before entrance into the program, it must be taken during the second semester of the program. There is no equivalent course at other community colleges and is normally offered on-line with approximately four required on campus lab days.

BIO 7 Head & Neck Anatomy & Embryology
Skeletal, muscular, vascular and neuroanatomy of the head and neck, emphasizing aspects useful for dental hygiene students. Prerequisite: BIO 4, ENGL 100. Recommended Preparation: READ 100 The following courses, or the equivalent, must be competed, with a combined GPA of 2.7 before you can apply to the program.

Area A: 6 units 3 units in Speech 1 or Speech 2 and
  3 units English 1A English Composition
Area B: 3 units Met by the science prerequisite
Area C: 3 units Humanities
Area D: 9 units 3 units in Psychology 1A and
  6 units in Sociology 1 or 2 and
US History or Political Science
Area E: Nutrition
Multicultural Studies: 3 units SOC 2 meets this requirement
