PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Could 1 semester change your life?

Now accepting applications for the spring 2009 semester!

What will I get out of the DBA?
You’ll get all the tools you need to succeed in college, in a career, and in life. In one semester, the DBA will help you develop:

Personally

  • Learn self-knowledge & self-discipline.
  • Reconnect with your motivation.
  • Learn effective communication & stress-management techniques.

Academically

  • Identify your strengths & goals.
  • Discover your learning style (how you learn best).
  • Reawaken your excitement for learning.
  • Strengthen your basics, like reading & writing.
  • Learn study & research skills.
  • Prove to yourself that you can carry a full-time load of college-level courses.

Professionally

  • Learn skills highly valued in today’s workplace: computer, presentation, teamwork & management skills.
  • Find a career with a future in a field that is right for you.

You’ll complete the DBA with a clear vision of where you are headed and how to get there. You’ll be equipped with the leadership skills to make a difference in our community.

What does the DBA help prepare me for?
A career in a high-wage or high-demand field such as:

Healthcare (Nursing, Radiology, Dental Hygiene, etc.)
Criminal Justice
Education
Business / Management
Social Work / Counseling
Lab technician (Biotechnology, Marine Science, etc.)
Computer Information Systems
Engineering
... the field of your choice!

Who is eligible for the DBA?
Anyone who:

  • is 18 years or older.
  • will attend Cabrillo full-time for one semester.
  • assesses at or above Reading 205 (9th grade level), or passed Reading 255.
  • desires to improve personally, academically & professionally.
  • would enjoy being part of a supportive learning community.

How does the DBA work?
First, you’ll take the Foundation Course, which runs from 9am-5pm for 9 days. This is where you’ll really get to know yourself, your classmates and your learning style, while gaining a new perspective on your education.

Then, for the rest of the semester (aka Bridge Semester), you’ll take a full course load:

- Self-Management (self-discipline)
- Team-Management (professional skills)
- Literacy
- Computer Science
- Movement (stress-management)
- Career Planning
- Project-Based Course (primary research on a social justice topic)

These classes are really fun! DBA instructors won’t put you to sleep with boring lectures, they’ll engage you with interactive, hands-on exercises, and welcome your feedback and questions.

You will be part of a learning community (or cohort), which means that you and your classmates will take all your courses together in the same classroom while the instructors rotate in and out.

There’s no way I could take all those classes…
We know it seems like a lot, but don’t worry. Your greatest support will come from your classmates, since you’re all in the same boat. You will also have the full support of your instructors, who create a classroom environment where everyone feels safe and respected. A weekly study group will give you dedicated time for your homework.

If you need more support for things like childcare or housing, DBA staff will connect you with campus or community resources.

And remember, hundreds of students just like you have made it through the DBA. You can too!

For more information or to apply …
Attend a free Orientation or contact Natalia Córdoba-Velásquez, Antonio Alarcón, or one of our offices.

Our staff would be happy to help you decide whether the DBA is right for you. Once you enroll, we’ll also help you register for classes and apply for financial aid.
