The program of courses offered by the ECE Department at the Watsonville Center has been designed to move students along a specific career path. Because the department values diversity of individual backgrounds and abilities, in addition to fulfilling course guidelines (as set forth in the Title V Course Outline), these courses include additional methodologies to develop reading and writing competence and critical thinking skills.
For the vast majority of students in our Watsonville courses, English is a second language. Students enrolled in any one of these courses present a broad range of levels of proficiency in English. Therefore, students entering the program are advised to take courses in a sequence that will facilitate their success in the specific courses they are taking, while moving them forward toward English language competency and full participation in all aspects of the ECE program and the College.
Below is a brief outline of the sequence of courses in the order recommended as well as support courses to be taken concurrently. Teaching strategies at each step of the sequence are focused on enhancing opportunities for student success.
Teaching Strategies
A significant proportion of material is taught in Spanish, with carefully structured guidance into English terminology. Extensive use of visual aids (charts and video presentations) in English and in Spanish. |
A greater proportion of material is taught in English with use of Spanish to ensure comprehension as needed. More structured guidance into English usage and terminology. Handouts in English and in Spanish.
