Acceleration in English 255

All English 255 courses at Cabrillo College offer students the opportunity to accelerate directly to English 1A. We began this process through a multi-year experimentation with ACE. After our collaboration, research, and practice, the Cabrillo College English department has determined that acceleration is a viable option for some basic skills students. In addition to offering acceleration in our ACE cohorts, beginning spring 2013, we make acceleration from English 255 to English 1A, 1H, 1AMC, 1AMCH, available to all English 255 students. Even so, we need to note that acceleration is the exception, not the norm. An English 255 student who is a candidate for acceleration demonstrates college level writing skills and the necessary study skills indicative of a student ready for college level work.

This page contains supplementary materials for instructors that were presented at the spring 2013 Flex activity: "Acceleration and Best Practices in Basic Skills English."
