HS 10 Personal Health

 
 

3 units; 3 hours lecture
A general survey of individual health with emphasis on disease prevention and body wellness. Topics include physical and mental health, nutrition, human sexuality, birth control, communicable diseases including HIV, the use and abuse of licit and illicit drugs, and the effects of alcohol and tobacco. May satisfy basic California teaching credential requirements in health education. This course may be taught in a distance learning format. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC, with limits: HS 10,14, WS 8 or WS 39HC combined-maximum credit:3 units.

 

 

HS 12 Stress Management

 

3 units; 3 hours lecture
A thorough presentation of stress theory and research as it relates to individual health. Topics include stress psychophysiology, stress and illness, lifestyle, and the sociocultural environment. Transfer Credit: CSU.

 

 
 

HS 15 Human Sexuality

 
 

3 units; 3 hours lecture
An indepth presentation of communication, attitudes and values; structure and function of genital system; physiology of human sexual responses; cross cultural and social-psychological considerations; fertility, lifestyle, and cultural changes in human sexuality. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

 

 
 

HS 20 Contemporary Issues in Health and Medicine

 
 

3 units; 3 hours lecture
Focuses on various health topics where opinions are divided and research is tentative. Topics chosen for debate and analysis in a given semester may be alternative and complimentary medicine, herbal and drug use in society, communicable disease, current views on contraception, and others. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

 

 
 

HS 21 Health and Physical Fitness

 
 

3 units; 3 hours lecture
In-depth study of the implications of physical activity relative to the mental, physical and social well-being of the individual in today’s society. Upon completion of the course, students will be capable of determining their physical fitness, including aerobic capacity, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, and endurance. Transfer Credit: CSU.
