Math 12 Elementary Statistics
- Online
Spring 2008
Class Website: www.coursecompass.com
Course Materials
1. A computer – PC or Mac is ok. Do you have a backup
plan? There are computers on campus in the Math Learning Center (1074) and the
Computer Technology Centers (Aptos, Building 1400 and Watsonville) available
for student use. (http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/ctc)
2. Elementary Statistics For the TI83/84 Plus, 2nd ed., by Triola.
This is available completely online (including the solutions manual) when an
Access Code is purchased through the bookstore or online at
coursecompass.com. To register or purchase online, you’ll need a course
ID from the instructor. You may wish to purchase a hard copy of the text or
solutions manual – this is optional.
3. A TI-83/84 Plus or Silver Edition calculator is required.
Students possessing an alternate calculator must take responsibility for being
able to complete the material. Please contact me with any questions about your
calculator.
Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, your success will be clearly demonstrated by the following
skills:
• Ability to distinguish and evaluate data production methods —
sampling, surveys, observational studies, experiments.
• Ability to describe, distinguish, and explain various data features
(e.g., shape, center, spread, and relationships).
• Ability to calculate certain statistics on your calculator -- sample
means and standard deviations, correlation coefficients and slopes and intercepts,
binomial probabilities, sampling standard errors, Z values and t
statistics. We will also investigate other distributions (F, chi-square) and
hypothesis testing. The text provides detailed instructions for the TI-83/84.
• Ability to calculate and interpret the meaning of probability in various
settings.
• Ability to choose appropriate statistical tools for different settings
and use them appropriately.
• Ability to develop appropriate interpretations and conclusions from
statistical research and calculator results.
Student Responsibilities
As an online student, your success strongly depends on your organization, motivation,
determination and commitment to this course. All of these attributes will allow
you to prioritize your schedule so that you have the amount of time necessary
to complete this course. It is your responsibility to check the course website at least twice a week. This is the only way you will
be able to remain involved in the course and be aware of any changes or announcements
regarding the course. If you do not communicate with your instructor for more
than two weeks, you may be dropped from the course.
Accommodations
Students with disabilities, including “invisible” disabilities will
be accommodated as appropriate (depending on availability). Please bring a verification
of your disability from the Learning Skills or DSPS offices along with a counselor’s
recommendations.
Grading
Your grade will be based on the number of points you earn out of 670 points
possible.
| Exam 1 | 100 points (Ch.1-4) |
| Exam 2 | 100 points (Ch.5-6) |
| Exam 3 | 100 points (Ch.7-8) |
| Final | 200 points (Ch.1-12) |
| Homework (online) | 60 points (number of sections completed (with 80% or better) x 1.5 points) |
| Homework (written) | 50 points (5 points x 10 assignments) |
| Participation/Lab | 60 points (15 points per exam period) |
90% or 603 pts = A
80% or 536 pts = B
70% or 441 pts = C
60% or 402 pts = D
<60% or <402 pts = F
may be taken Cr/NC
Exams
Before each exam a review for the exam will be posted. There are also “Practice
Tests” available online for each chapter. You may use your calculator.
No cell phones, PDAs or other devices are allowed. There are no make-ups for
the exams and exams may not be taken late.
If you are caught cheating on an exam, you will receive 0 points for that exam. If you are caught cheating a second time, you will be dropped from the course.
Homework (online)
Each batch of online homework for an exam is due by the exam date. You will
not have time to complete all the material if you leave it all until right before
an exam. Online homework cannot be submitted after a due date, so please plan
accordingly.
The online homework provides instant feedback (some feedback is good, some not so helpful). The computer is very picky about correct rounding! If you miss a problem, you can try a similar problem to receive full credit, so hopefully you’ll earn 100% on all the online homework. However, the online homework is graded on completion, not correctness. Be sure to “submit” your work to receive credit.
Homework (paper)
You will complete a collection of written work, to be turned in at each exam.
Participation/Lab
Various activities will require your participation during the semester. You
can earn points by posting questions or discussions in the online forums. There
are also projects you can do away from the computer. There are 15 points possible
per exam period.
