FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

  • How many programs does the Medical Assistant (MA) Department have?
  • There are SIX distinct programs. Go to Medical Assistant Department Home and the
    Cabrillo College Catalog to determine the program(s) for you.

  • Is there an application process for any of the programs?
  • No, there is no official process.  When you are ready, just register for classes
    Apply and Register.  Cabrillo academic counselors can help you set up an education plan. Contact the Counseling Office.
    The MA Program and the Phlebotomy Program have Student Handbooks with program applications. These handbooks will be given to you by the instructor when you have fulfilled specific classes with a 2.0 GPA or better.

  • Is there a waiting list to get into any of the programs?

    No.  However, some classes fill up very quickly so register early.

  • Do any of the programs have a ‘Start’ time and an “End” time?
  • No.  You may begin any program whenever you are ready. You may finish any program 
    as your time allows. Time commitment for program completion is based on:
    1. The program you are interested in
    2. Whether you are a full-time or part-time student
    3. Whether you are working toward an Associate of Science Degree or a Skills or Proficiency Certificate. 

  • Are there prerequisites for any classes?
  • Yes. Go to Cabrillo College Catalog and the Schedule of Classes for details.

  • Are there special requirements for any classes?

    Yes, for some. Go to Schedule of Classes and carefully read the information above AND below the class details.

  • Are clinical externships required?
  • Yes, for three programs.
    - The Medical Assistant Program and the Phlebotomy Technician Program require
    supervised, unpaid externships.
    - The Medical Administrative Assistant Program requires an externship which may
    be paid or unpaid.

  • If I am already working in the field can my employment count as my externship?
  • Yes, if you are a Medical Assistant extern and you make special arrangements with your
    employer to waive your salary during your externship contract.

    Yes, if you are a Medical Administrative Assistant extern.
    No, if you are a Phlebotomy extern.

  • How do I get an externship?
  • You are placed by your supervising instructor, usually during your last semester, if you have met all program requirements.

  • Other than classroom requirements, are there other requirements for externship placement?
  • Yes, including “Health Requirements for Allied Health Students”; prior to
    your placement you will obtain a packet which details all requirements for externships.

  • Are there certification and/or licensing tests?

            Yes.  For Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy Technician.  Your instructors can discuss 

            other certificate opportunities available to you after you begin working in health care.  

  • Are reading and math assessments required before registering for any programs in the MA Department? 
  • No, not specifically for the MA Department. However, you do need to satisfy any Cabrillo College requirements. Contact the Counseling Office 

  • Do I need to meet with an academic counselor before I apply to Cabrillo College?

           It is highly recommended but not required.

  • Is there an academic counselor who specializes in assisting MA students?
  • No.  However, all the academic counselors have a ‘MA Department Counselor’s Handbook with current program information.Contact the Counseling Office

  • How do I apply to Cabrillo College?
  • Go to Apply and Register

  • Where can I learn more about the Medical Assistant Department?
  • Carefully read the detailed information on all of the SIX programs in the
    Cabrillo College Catalog and the Medical Assistant Department Website .
    If you do not have a computer, there are information packets outside the door of Room 605; to have a packet mailed to you or for further information call the Program Specialists in the MA office at 831- 479-6248.

  • Where is the MA Office located?

    It is located in Bldg. 600; Room 602. Enter Room 601 through 2 sets of glass, double doors; Room 602 is on the left.

  • Is there a MA office at the Scotts Valley and Watsonville campus?
  • No, there is an office only at the Aptos campus.  However, there are MA classes at both facilities. 

  • May I enroll in MA Department courses to add to my skills or just for personal interest?

           Yes.
