Nursing Program Wait List
Cabrillo College Associate Degree Nursing Program Waitlist Statement
The Cabrillo College Nursing Program currently admits 30 students every semester, in February
and August. Cabrillo’s Nursing program has an Application/Selection Process that allows
students to submit an application at any time, once all prerequisites have been completed. Application Information. Those who submit a completed application packet, and who have completed the prerequisites, will be added to our waitlist, in order, based on the USPS certified mail postmark date of their application packet.
- We rigorously control the waitlist based exclusively on your application postmark. Students on the waitlist are guaranteed placement into the program.
- Waitlist Statements are mailed to all wait listed students twice a year, in March and October,
notifying students of their updated wait list position.
- Wait list position information cannot be given out over the telephone or via email.
While on the wait list maintaining accurate contact information is essential. It is extremely important that you notify the Nursing Department, in writing, of any changes to your mailing address, phone number, and email. We will use your contact information to provide you with regular updates of your waitlist status. These notifications require your response. Failure to respond to these regular updates by the required deadlines will result in your removal from the waitlist. If we are unable to reach you by mail you will be removed from the waitlist. Email any and all contact info changes to: nursing@cabrillo.edu
While we can guarantee placement into the program, we cannot guarantee when students will begin the program, given the variables of the waitlist. Given normal life events (moves, jobs, pregnancy, changes in priorities), not all of those on our waitlist will actually start our program. An average of 10 to 25% of the waitlisted students dropoff the list for various reasons. This allows others on the waitlist to move up the list. This is one of the most difficult variables of the waitlist to predict.
Given the number of students on the waitlist and the program’s experience with the variables inherent with such a waitlist, we estimate a wait of 2 to 3 years for those currently applying to the program. Your wait could be less than this, or more than this, given the many variables involved. We strongly encourage qualified students to apply to the program. The length of the waitlist can fluctuate greatly over time, and should not deter committed students from pursuing their goals.
How to use your time on the wait list productively:
GENERAL EDUCATION: Complete your general education requirements! Make an appointment with a Cabrillo counselor to discuss general education requirements. Counseling appointments can be made by calling 478-6274.
FORGIVABLE LOAN PROGRAMS: Explore employment opportunites that offer "Forgivable Loan Programs". These programs offer employees the opportunity to have their education paid for in exchange for a "Forgivable Loan" that includes a committment to work for their institution for a period of time after graduation. Many local health care facilities offer these programs, some of which are Kaiser, Sutter, Dominican and CHOMP.
EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: There are many classes avaiable at Cabrillo that are valuable for students on the Nursing Program wait list. Go to these Cabrillo program web sites for information about classes currently avaiable.
The Medical Assisting Program offers classes such as "Medical Terminology", "Medical Law and Ethics", " Medical Spanish" and "EKG".
The Human Service Program offers classes such as "Introduction to Human Aging"
