The employment opportunities in the field of Corrections are currently increasing at a rapid rate throughout California. This is due to new sentencing legislation, which has expanded the numbers of employees needed in corrections, not only at the many new correctional institutions but in the field as well. Cabrillo is one of many California community colleges that has responded to this expanding need for well-trained correctional personnel by developing a new Corrections specific major.
This new major consists of courses that have been developed by a Commission comprised of various California State correctional agencies, and has been endorsed by the Community College Chancellors Office. This new Corrections curriculum is not only consistent throughout the State Community Colleges, but is accepted as lower division transfer coursework by those California State Universities having Corrections programs. This curriculum also will satisfy various in-service certification requirements for correctional personnel. A Corrections Certificate of Proficiency is currently being proposed/developed by the State, whereby a student would be allowed to complete this curriculum at a community college instead of at an academy.
Extensive exposure to the field of corrections will be made available to the students through field trips, guest speakers, and internships. This exposure can become quite valuable to the student, not only to familiarize them with the field of corrections and career opportunities, but to also allow the student to "network" and develop references and contacts who might later assist them in obtaining entry-level career positions. A partial list of the positions in which recent Cabrillo graduates are currently employed are: Juvenile and Adult Probation Officers, Probation Aides, State Parole Agents, County and State Correctional Officers, Juvenile Hall Group Supervisor, and Juvenile Mental Heath Counselors. Cabrillo's instructional staff is always available and eager to counsel and help place qualified graduates.
