About the Center
Twenty minutes from the main Cabrillo campus, on the edge of a large public park overlooking the ocean, is a peaceful, pleasant place that is committed to both healing and learning. Here, long-term, affordable rehabilitation is provided in a school setting.
Cabrillo College's Stroke and Acquired Disability Center was created to support those with serious acquired physical disabilities and their loved ones as they travel the post-hospital rehabilitation journey. Anyone, who has suffered a stroke or is living with a chronic disability such as Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, amputation, severe diabetes, heart disease, hearing loss and/or extreme frailty caused by the aging process, knows that learning to live with a changed body and mind is a long process requiring lots of adjustments, new knowledge and skills plus a whole different way of viewing and understanding the world.
This special place is
where over 5000 disabled students of all ages and backgrounds have returned to school to acquire these new skills and new ways of thinking. Some have had graduate degrees and some never went to college. But, they all have shared the common experience of living with a disability. And, they all have become committed to learning new ways to live with their disabilities, in order to live rich, fulfilling, and happy lives.
