CABRILLO COLLEGE GOVERNING BOARD

February 6, 2008

SPECIAL MEETING The special meeting of the Cabrillo College Governing Board was held at the Sesnon House, Cabrillo Community College District, 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos, California on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, as part of a Flex Week Activity co-sponsored by the Faculty Senate, CCEU and CCFT. Chair Claudine Wildman called the meeting to order in Open Session at 5:20 pm. Roll was taken; present were Chair Claudine Wildman and Trustees Rebecca Garcia, John Leopold, and Rachael Spencer. Trustee Katy Stonebloom arrived after the panel discussion concluded.	CALL TO ORDER
INFORMATION ITEM Item 1. Discussion Regarding Shared Governance, Cooperation and Collaboration Dr. Rory O’Brien introduced the panel for the discussion; Michael Mangin was the facilitator. Panelists were Trustees Leopold, Spencer, and Chair Wildman; faculty members Eric Hoffman and David Reynolds; and CCEU representative Jill Gallo. A sampling of the questions asked follows: • What area of the county do you represent/where in Cabrillo do you work? • Why did you want to be a Board member/what brought you to Cabrillo? • What would faculty/staff/Board members learn if they spent a week/month in each others’ shoes? • What do you each perceive are the greatest challenges facing the other? • What do you wish you knew more about the college or could communicate to the Board? • Have you met with Board or faculty/staff members from other colleges and what have you learned? • How much of a time/financial commitment is it to serve on the Board? What suggestion would you have for someone who is interested in serving in a similar position? • What direction is the college going to take in the future? How do we juggle commitments to basic skills and career and technical education as well as our other programs? How do we best carry out the mission of the college? • Board members represent the community for Cabrillo. What are some of the other connections with the Santa Cruz community? How do you communicate with your constituency? • Board: what’s the one thing you’d like employees to know about the Board? Faculty/staff: what’s the one thing you’d like the Board to know about CCFT, CCEU or the Senate? • Board: how do you set an agenda or brainstorm for new initiatives? Faculty/staff: how do you innovate and achieve effective change in your area? • Board: what’s one of your biggest surprises serving as a board member? Faculty/staff: what has been one of your biggest surprises being employed in the district? An interactive panel and audience discussion was held.
