Seahawk GNU/Linux

A distro to call our own at Cabrillo College

Oh, great! Just what the world needs -- another distro: Well, yes and no. While there are roughly 350 active distros (out of around 500, including the inactive ones), you might argue that there is better ways to use our knowledge and our time. Regardless, the motivation behind why we are opting to "roll our own," so to speak, stems from a couple of reasons, like:

Education: After all, this is Cabrillo College, a learning institution, right? You will learn something -- probably a lot -- about the workings of GNU/Linux by participating in this project, and in the process you might be able to teach others. Not only this, we are talking to CIS instructors about allowing those who work on this project extra credit in CIS90 and CIS130 (not that you have to be in these classes to participate); and

Accomplishment: Not only might participation in this project look good on your resume going forward, it also is a chance to test your proverbial mettle. So, are you up to the challenge?

What's in it for me?

If you're looking to reap Gatesian fortune from this project, sorry to disappoint you. You won't get anything from this project except the knowledge you and others on the team gain from building our own home-grown distro, your name and contributions in Cabrillo College and FOSS legend as one of the developers of Seahawk GNU/Linux, and the satisfaction of knowing that you contributed to a better digital world by seeing a distro to fruition.

Want to join the team?

We already have the guidebook from Linux From Scratch that you can look at and download here. Take a look -- it's only 600 pages, and download it if you like. Now if that doesn't scare you off, if you want to particpate in the project, contact Larry Cafiero by e-mail at seahawkgnulinux-at-gmail-dot-com or call him at 831-355-7303.
