President’s Circle

President's Circle Donors on a historical tour of Paradise Park with Cabrillo College Historian Emeritus, Sandy Lydon
The President’s Circle program raises unrestricted funds for the college’s areas of greatest need. The funds, allocated at the president’s discretion, enable the foundation to offer scholarships to students, provide support for student services, and educate the community’s workforce. President’s Circle members are part of the Cabrillo “family” that plays a critical role in the success of the foundation and the college.
In appreciation, members are invited to participate in a number of unique events such as a reception with Cabrillo College President Brian King and Cabrillo Stage Musical, holiday party hosted by President Brian King, historical tour led by famed Cabrillo College Emeritus Historian Sandy Lydon, and invitations to other exclusive President’s Circle events.
If you would like more information on how to join the President’s Circle please contact Paula Kenyon at 831-479-5005, or via email: Paula Kenyon.
Scholarships

American Dream Recipients
The Cabrillo College Foundation administers a very large scholarship program, which distributes over $375,000 annually to financially needy and academically promising students.
A scholarship gift is truly an investment in the future of our students, and they are grateful for the opportunities such gifts bring to them. At a recent Scholarship Ceremony, scholarship recipient Tiffiny shared her inspirational story. She is the recipient of several scholarships and like many Cabrillo students came to Cabrillo as a re-entry student. Until the age of 30, Tiffiny had only an eighth grade education. The birth of her first son was the impetus for her to get her GED while the birth of her second son spurred her to come to Cabrillo where she has earned a 4.0 GPA and is enrolled in the nursing program. The following is an excerpt from her speech:
“Cabrillo College has opened up a whole new world for me. My dreams and goals would not be possible without the financial support that I have received from scholarship donors. Like many in Santa Cruz County, my husband and I struggle to make ends meet. Your support has allowed me to focus on my studies and education, and in turn, will ultimately enable me to provide support for my own children when they embark on their college careers. I thank you, my family thanks you. I am truly honored by your award, and I will work hard to attain my goals and give back to this wonderful community.”

Cabrillo Advancement Program (CAP)
Cabrillo Advancement Program Recipients
The Cabrillo Advancement Program (CAP) is a combination of innovative mentoring activities designed to increase the academic success of socially, educationally, and economically disadvantaged students in local middle and high schools. The goal is for participating students to graduate from high school and enroll at Cabrillo, receiving a $1,000 scholarship upon enrollment. A full-time Coordinator/Counselor administers the CAP program. CAP is sponsored by Cabrillo College and primarily funded by the Foundation through private donations.
CAP scholars are selected through a competitive process open to students who qualify for free or reduced lunches under Federal guidelines, show academic potential, and have a good school attendance record. As a part of the application process, students are required to write a personal essay describing their goals and interests. Students, parents, and Cabrillo College formalize their mutual commitments by signing a CAP contract.
The CAP program began in 1991 at E.A. Hall Middle School in Watsonville when twelve sixth graders were chosen to receive the first CAP Scholarships. CAP has since expanded to Lakeview Middle School, Mission Hill Junior High School, Pajaro Middle School, Rolling Hills Middle School, and Shoreline Middle School.
If you would like to support CAP students please contact Eileen Hill at 831-479-6458, or via email: Eileen Hill.
Heritage Club

Cabrillo College Nursing Students
Donors join the Heritage Club when they have included Cabrillo College in their estate plans. Though Cabrillo does not have to be told of a bequest, it is useful for planning purposes to know that a gift is anticipated, and it is often helpful to discuss with donors in advance both the structuring of a gift and whether it will achieve the donor’s goals. Additionally, we like to acknowledge the generosity of donors who remember Cabrillo in their estate will.
If you would like to join the Heritage Club or learn more about making a planned gift to support Cabrillo College students, please contact Melinda Silverstein at 831-479-6338, or vial email: Melinda Silverstein.
Planned Gifts Help Sustain Vibrant Nursing Program

Neva Bournier
Bell & Bournier’s Love of Nursing Prompts Generous Gifts
Two local nurses left a legacy of support with the creation of two separate scholarship endowments for Cabrillo College nursing students.
Neva Isabel Bournier, an RN who continued taking classes into her eighties, left $250,000 to the Cabrillo College Nursing Program as a way to pass on to others her lifelong love of nursing. A native of North Dakota, Bournier lived in Santa Cruz for several decades before dying in 2005 at the age of 94. Always interested in health issues, she was said to have claimed, “Once a nurse, always a nurse.”
Greta McDonald Bell also put Cabrillo in her will with the creation of a $300,000 endowment for nursing students. Bell, a California native, was a U.S. Army veteran who, in her 50s, decided to return to school. In 1965, at the age of 57, she received a licensed vocational nursing degree with an emphasis in psychiatric care from Cabrillo College. She died in 2006 at the age of 97.
The gifts will make a huge difference to students who are in the rigorous nursing program, said Tom McKay, Director of Allied Health/Nursing, RN, PhD. “The students are trying to keep body and soul together in the two years they’re in a program that requires their full-time attention. These scholarships will really help with resources.”
In 2005 Cabrillo introduced a spring enrollment to the two-year nursing program which doubled the number of students to help meet the need in the community.
“Planned gifts can leave a legacy that provides much needed continued support for students and educational programs while encouraging others to do the same,” said Rachel Wedeen, chair of the Planned Giving Committee.

Faculty Grants

Faculty Grants Recipients
The Cabrillo College Foundation has tripled the amount available to faculty through three faculty grant programs: Faculty Grants for Student Success, Engineering and Applied Science Endowment, and the Les and Jeane Ley Family Fund. Each program has different amounts available, eligibility, timeline, and selection body.
If you would like to support Cabrillo College faculty to improve student success please contact Paula Kenyon at 831-479-5005, or vial email: Paula Kenyon.
If you are a Cabrillo College faculty member and would like information on any of the faculty grant programs please contact Paula Kenyon at 831-479-5005, or vial email: Paula Kenyon.
Women’s Educational Success (WES)

WES Recipient
In 1997, the Cabrillo College Foundation, inspired by Peggy Downes Baskin and Rachael Spencer, founded the Women’s Educational Success program.
Women’s Educational Success is a special financial aid program funded by private donations to the Cabrillo College Foundation. Women’s Educational Success was started with 100 founding members, each contributing $100 to establish an endowment for assisting Cabrillo College students. This endowment provides emergency cash grants for women with a strong commitment to succeed in college.
WES Grant Advisors, sixteen Cabrillo College faculty members and counselors, recommend WES grant recipients to the Cabrillo College Foundation. Typically the range of gift will be $100 - $500 per recipient. The WES grants are for immediate emergent needs of women. We anticipate that many of the recipients will be single mothers with very limited resources. The WES grants are not for the expected expenses of starting school. The priority is for unexpected expenses such as the replacement of a schoolbook, materials needed for a class, or a bus pass. WES grants are awarded within 48 hours of the request and can make the difference between staying in school and dropping out.
If you would like to help Cabrillo students by supporting WES please contact Paula Kenyon at 831-479-5005, or via email: Paula Kenyon.
If you are a student and would like to know about a WES grant please contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office or speak with your counselor.
Annual Fund

2008 Annual Fund Phonathon Callers
The Cabrillo College Foundation Annual Fund is a telephone outreach campaign and is a valuable source of ongoing support for Cabrillo College. The Annual Fund works to keep people involved with Cabrillo College by reaching out to students, parents of students, and alumni. Cabrillo College directs unrestricted donations to the Annual Fund to the initiatives with the most critical needs.
If you would like to make a donation to the Annual Fund please contact Eileen Hill at 831-479-6458, or via email: Eileen Hill
Naming Opportunities
Several Cabrillo donors have elected to take advantage of naming opportunities that come with very significant gifts. Cabrillo is currently engaged in renovation and construction of facilities, which presents new options for naming a building for a donor or someone the donor chooses to honor. For more information about naming opportunities please contact Melinda Silverstein at (831) 479-6338, or via email: Melinda Silverstein.
