 Cheerleading Program Rules and Regulations

Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program members will adhere to certain standards of academic achievement, conduct, responsibilities, health habits, dress, public appearance, performance, transportation policies, criteria, selection procedures and expectations placed upon them as representatives of Cabrillo College, the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program and of the Department of Student Affairs.

 

The Cabrillo College Cheer and Stunt Team, The Cabrillo College Dance Team and The Cabrillo College Mascot Team make up the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.  Both the Cheer and Stunt Team and the Dance Team are made up of two squads, a competition squad and red shirt squad. 

 

VERY IMPORTANT: The Cheer and Stunt Team and the Dance Team are Competition Teams, Not Recreational Teams. All members who are chosen to participate or are hoping to participate must be willing to compete or be working toward competing, if placed on a red shirt squad. No Exceptions!

 

1)           The Cabrillo College Cheer and Stunt Team:

 

a.           Primary purpose is to compete or work towards competing in at least 2 cheerleading competitions

b.           Supports Cabrillo Men’s Football and Men's Basketball and possibly other appropriate intercollegiate sports

c.           Represents Cabrillo College at campus and community events and activities

 

2)           The Cabrillo College Dance Team: 

a.           Primary purpose is to compete or work towards competing in at least 2 dance competitions

b.           Supports Cabrillo Men’s Football and Men's Basketball and possibly other appropriate intercollegiate sports

c.           Represents Cabrillo College at campus and community events and activities

 

  • Mascot Team

 

    • Will perform as Sammy the Seahawk the Cabrillo College Mascot
    • Mascot team will be made up of two or more students due to the frequency and time       demands of performances.
    • Mascot team members will remain as anonymous as possible, until their time of    graduation, where they will be announced during graduation rehearsal.  

I.                                        ELIGIBILITY

1)           All participants must:

a.           Be 18 years old by September 1

b.           Sign General Release of Liability Waiver

c.           Show proof of completed Physical by July1

d.           Enroll or be enrolled in a course immediately after making the team, to be able to participate in any practices, performances or competitions.

e.           Always be enrolled in course to be able to participate in any practices, performances or competitions.

2)           Freshmen

a.           No minimum cumulative GPA required to try-out and to be eligible during Summer 2008 or Fall 2008 semesters.

b.           Must have and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA by the end of Fall 2008 to be eligible to be on the team.

c.           College Courses taken when the student was still in high school and where student received a grade less than the 2.0 equivalent will not count toward cumulative GPA.

 

3)           Sophomores

a.           minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to try-out and must be maintained to remain on the team.

b.           College Courses taken when the student was still in high school and where student received a grade less than the 2.0 equivalent will not count toward cumulative GPA.

 

4)           Cross Enrolled Students

a.           Students taking 3 or more units at a University or other Community College are eligible

b.           A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to try-out and must be maintained to remain on the team.

c.           College Courses taken when the student was still in high school and where student received a grade less than the 2.0 equivalent will not count toward cumulative GPA.

 

5)           Part time Students

              a.           Students over the age of 22,

b.           Students with AS degree, AA degree or higher, taking courses and working full time are eligible.

c.           A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to try-out and must be maintained to remain on the team.

d.           College Courses taken when the student was still in high school and where student received a grade less than the 2.0 equivalent will not count toward cumulative GPA.

 

 

II.                                      CHEERLEADER SELECTION PROCESS & RED SHIRTING

 

  A.        CHEERLEADER SELECTION PROCESS

             

              The Office of Student Affairs Student Activities Coordinator/Cheerleading Program Director and Program Coaches will coordinate the Cheer Squad try-outs. The try-outs will be conducted three times during the academic year. 

 

              A general tryout will be held in April and then again in July if needed for the next Competition and Inter-Collegiate year.  Try-outs will be an open for all eligible candidates.

 

              A Red Shirt tryout will be held in October for all red shirt candidates and for very strong potential candidates who missed the April and July tryouts.  This tryout will be more difficult than the general tryout.  Candidates must score high enough to be ready to join the competition team immediately and be at the competition team’s current skill level.

 

1)           Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program members will be selected on the basis of spirit, cheerleading skill, gymnastics skills, stunting skills and dance skills.

 

2)           The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program reserves the right to refuse a try-out or a position on any team or squad to any person for any of the following reasons:

 

              a.           Poor Academic Standing

              b.           Disciplinary or negative social standing with any part of Cabrillo College

              c.           Past performance which dishonored the College or cheerleading program

              d.           Poor Physical or Psychological health

              e.           Debt to Cabrillo College or the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program

              f.            Having quit the cheerleading program at any time.

              g.           Reason deemed appropriate and in the best interest of the Cheerleading Program

 

3)           Non-returning members, when asked may help conduct clinics and auditions for try-outs.

 

4)           Tryouts consist of one clinic day (usually on a Saturday) and one audition day (usually that immediate Sunday)

 

5)           The cheer and stunt tryouts normally includes but are not limited to, a cheer, dance, technical dance, jumps, a round-off, gymnastics, tumbling passes and stunts.  Policies governing the cheer, jumps, gymnastics and stunts will be announced prior to the try-outs.

 

6)           The dance team tryouts normally include but are not limited to, a performance dance, jumps, turns, quarter times and an interview

  

7)           If a returning Cheerleader is unable to participate in the April try-out due to surgery or injury resulting from cheerleading for Cabrillo College or a University/college class or athletic situation, then the following system comes into play:

 

a.           She/he will be excused from try-outs, and a position will be saved for him/her.

b.           If a the cheerleader turns in a doctors release and the required physical is verified by Cabrillo College Health services prior to attending camp in August, a special try-out will be conducted.

c.           The special try-out will involve auditioning for coaches and Program Director.

d.           If a Cheerleader's recovery is not complete before attending Camp and the cheerleader cannot try out, then the Program Staff will determine who fills that position.

e.           Cheerleading Squad vacancies shall be filled by a qualified cheerleaders selected by the Program Director. That person must meet all eligibility requirements follow the prescribed procedures before any participation.

 

RED SHIRTING

 A student may choose to red shirt one competition & Inter-collegiate year for the following reason:

a.Student has never been a cheerleader before but has the talent to do so.

b.     Student cannot make the full commitment to be a cheerleader the entire year.

c.     Student currently has an injury or illness that prevents them from cheerleading.

3)           The program staff may ask a student to red shirt after try-outs or at any time for the         following reason:

              a.     Student does not have the skill level needed yet.

              b.     Student has an injury which needs time to heel before student can safely participate.

4)           Red Shirting a year will not count towards the students 4 year eligibility.

5)             Red Shirts will be required to be at all red shirt designated events.  These practices will    be determined by program staff.

6)           Red Shirts may be eligible to join a competition team, when the program staff feels the red shirt posses the skills needed to compete, but must audition to prove sufficient skill.

    • Red Shirts will be required and it is in there best interest to be at all red shirt applicable practices.  These practices will be determined by Program staff.
    • Red Shirts will be required to follow all Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program Rules and Regulations.
    • Red Shirts will be required to purchase a warm-up suit and may purchase shoes and camp gear only if he/she so wishes.
    • All Red Shirts must pay in full for all uniform expenses, before any order is placed in their name or for them.

 

III.                                     COMPETITION & INTERCOLEGIATE YEAR

 

A.          The length of service for all Cheerleader members will be One Competition and Inter-Collegiate Year. The competition year starts the date of the tryout auditions in April to the next April tryout audition.  This includes the recruitment period between the last competition/game and tryouts.

 

B.           A Competition & Inter-collegiate year includes, spring practices, summer practices, fall practices, winter practices, summer camp, regular and playoff intercollegiate athletic year requirements and any competitions

 

C.          Cheerleaders may be called upon to participate at college activities and events, alumni functions and intercollegiate athletic events other than Football and Basketball. Every attempt will be made to balance time commitments. Although individuals may feel they've been selected for specific sports, the ultimate emphasis must be on the support of Cabrillo College activities and intercollegiate athletic programs.

 

D.          Cheerleaders are eligible for the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program as long as they are a student at Cabrillo College.  

 

F.           Cheerleaders who quite for reasons other than those of severe health problems or severe injury may loose all eligibility to participate in the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program indefinitely.  Program Director will decide whether or not cheerleader is still eligible.

            

IV.                                     ACADEMIC STATUS

 Cabrillo College, the Student Affairs Office and The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program are very concerned about each member’s academic status.  Not only are there liability concerns attached to a members academic status, it is also very important to us that each member is taking advantage of the academic opportunities presented to them while at Cabrillo College.  As a program we are very proud of the fact that our members are not only good athletes but also good students.  Therefore the following apply;

 
  1. All eligibility requirements in Article I of this document apply.

 

  1. If a student withdraws form a classes or for any other reason falls below the enrolled units required for eligibility, she/he will be dismissed for the Cheerleading Program.

 

  1. Participants will not be allowed to participate in any Cabrillo College Cheerleading practice, event or activity if they are in violation of the requirements in A and B above.

 

 

 

 

 

V.                                      CONDUCT & EXPULSION

 

              It cannot be stressed enough the Cheerleader’s role as a Cabrillo College Representative is very visible honor. Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program members are highly visible symbols of Cabrillo College, and, thus, must conduct themselves at all times as ladies and gentlemen. They should do nothing which brings embarrassment to Cabrillo College, the Office of Student Affairs, the Athletic Department and, most importantly, to themselves and to their families.

             

              Selection as a Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program Cheerleader is a prestigious honor and separates that individual from the rest of the student body and appropriate conduct is mandated accordingly. Therefore the following specifically apply:

 

1.           ALL members of the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program must strictly adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, criteria and conditions of Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.  Cheerleaders hoping to return for another term particularly must adherence or jeopardize their ability to be a member the following year.

 

2.           Cheerleader must read rules and regulations carefully and be aware that although some    violations may result in immediate expulsion, repeated violations of any of the rules and               regulations may also result in expulsion from the cheerleading program.

 

3.           No illegal drugs of any kind will be allowed at any time.  Members caught using or on drugs of any kind will be immediately expelled from the program.

 

4.           No smoking or smokeless tobacco chewing is allowed at any Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program activity or event, whether in uniform or not.  This includes but is not limited to all practices, receptions, banquets, fundraisers and traveling to and from games, camp and competitions.  Violation of this clause will result in the suspension form that event or activity and the next game or competition.

 

5.           No Alcohol is allowed at any Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program activity or event, whether in uniform or not.  This includes but is not limited to all practices, receptions, banquets, fundraisers and traveling to and from games, camp and competitions.  Violation of this clause will result in immediate expulsion from the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program and student will also be referred to a college official for other possible disciplinary action.

 

6.           No alcoholic beverages will be consumed the before any athletic events, competitions and practices. Alcoholic beverage consumption, regardless of the amount consumed, can dull a person's senses and reaction time, which can lead to possible injury of that squad member or a fellow squad member(s). Violation of this clause will result in suspension for that game or competition and the next game or competition

 

 

 

7.           No alcoholic beverages will be consumed by any Cheerleader during transit to or from away games or competitions, at the hotel where the squad is staying especially when housed with the athletic team, during a pre or post game competition reception or at the game or competition. Violation of this clause will result in immediate expulsion from the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program and the student will be referred to the Dean of student services for other possible disciplinary action.

 

8.           Any member of the Cabrillo College Cheerleading program who shows up to make a road trip and gives the impression of being under the influence of alcohol will not be permitted to make that road trip and will be suspended for one additional game or competition following that road trip.

 

9.           Abusive language at any time and towards anyone (program staff, squad members, fans, officials, etc.) will not be tolerated and will be grounds for possible suspension or even dismissal from the Cheer Squad.

 

10.         Any action, which brings undue embarrassment to the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program, will be grounds for dismissal from the program.

 

11.         The Office of Student Affairs is vitally concerned about the liability issue of an underage student traveling under its auspices being caught consuming alcohol and also for any use of a false identification card to obtain the alcohol. That student as with all students is subject to disciplinary action by the Dean of Students Services as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct.

 

12.         Under-age drinking at a Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program game, competition, event or activity will not be tolerated, especially with false identification cards.  Any Cheerleader caught drinking under-age or caught supplying an under-age cheerleader with alcohol will immediately be dismissed from the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program and will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for other possible disciplinary action..

 

 

13.         The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program Director, when considering expulsion of an individual from the program will evaluate the circumstance for expulsion, determine the rules and regulations the student has violated and will implement expulsion, by notifying the student verbally and in writing.  If student can not be located within 14 working days and an attempt has been made to inform the student of expulsion.  The expulsion will automatically go into affect. 

 

14.         The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program Director will determine the severity of all misconduct covered or not in this document.  Where there is no specific punishment outlined in this document, the Program Director will enforce disciplinary action accordingly.

 

 

 

VI.                                     ATTENDANCE

 

Good attendance and on-time arrivals are vital to a well-prepared squad.

Every cheerleader must be considerate of the program as a whole.

 

A.          Late Arrivals

             

1.           Late arrivals will result in the person following the Jump Rules:

 
a.           For practices and fundraisers: For every  five minutes you are late to practices or fundraisers you have to do 5 jumps (tuck, toe, right hurdle, left hurdle and a pike) and you will put the cafeteria back in order at the end of practice.
 
b.           For competitions, games, events and road trips:  For every five minutes you are late you have to do 10 jumps (tuck, toe, right hurdle, left hurdle and a pike) and you will put the cafeteria back in order at the end of practice.

 

2.           Coach (s) will record tardiness and absences to practices and all events

 

3.           Coach (s) will be responsible for making the person do jumps.

 

4.           A squad member will follow the Jump Rules for their first five violations.

 

5.           Habitual and consistent violations will result in her/him being suspended from a game along with contacting 10 businesses.  Members will attend the game but will not perform.

 

6            Severe violations will be delt with on a case by case basis and may result in him/her being suspended temporarily or expelled from the program. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

B.          Excused Absences

 

1.           Excused absences will include:

 
a.           Illness to the Cheerleader member and/or immediate family members requiring that student's attention and travel away from campus.

 

b.           Death to an immediate family;

 
c.           Mandatory college or class conferences and field trips.

 

Notice of these situations, when possible, must be submitted to the Program Director at least 24 hours in advance. It is recognized this certainly may not be possible when it involves a severe illness, life threatening injury or death in the immediate family, but notification should be given as soon as possible

 

2.           Work and changes in work schedules are Not excused absence.

 

3.           Classes scheduled, a half hour before, during or a half hour after practice are not excused absences unless it is your last semester and you need that class to transfer.  A signed counselor note stating so must be given to Program Director as proof.

 

4.           Individual or Group Review and Study sessions are NOT considered as excused absences from practices, games and competitions.

 

5.           University students must schedule classes with enough class travel and prep time as to not interfere with practices.  If unavoidable the university students may be excused no earlier than one half hour before the end of practice.  Student is responsible for all material missed.

 

6.           Vacations and family vacations are NOT considered excused absences.

 

7.           ONLY scheduled Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program vacations and approved vacations will be excused. 

 

8.           Approved vacations can Only be taken after tryouts and two weeks before Summer Camp.

 

9.           NO non-scheduled Vacations will be approved after the two week camp deadline.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

C           Unexcused Absences

 

1.           If a Cheerleader misses an event or a game with an unexcused absence, then she/he will go to 5 businesses and ask for donations. There will be a flier for the business to sign and a follow-up phone call will be made by the coaching staff.

 

2.           Missing a competition will result in immediate removal from the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.

 

3.           If a Cheerleader misses a practice just prior to a game with an unexcused absence, then he/she will go to 5 businesses and ask for donations.  There will be a flier for the business to sign and a follow-up phone call will be made by the coaching staff. Repeated violations of this rule will result in further disciplinary action and possible suspension or expulsion from the program

 

4.           If a cheerleader misses one of the last two practices before a competition with an unexcused absence, it will be up to the discretion of the Program Director to determine whether or not to let he/she perform, if and only if he/she can demonstrate that that he/she can do the routine perfectly and inclusion in routine allows for it.  If allowed to perform in competition he/she will go to 15 businesses and ask for donations.  There will be a flier for the business to sign and a follow-up phone call will be made by the coaching staff. Repeated violations of this rule will result in further disciplinary action and possible suspension or expulsion from the program

 

  •         If a cheerleader misses transportation to a game and had committed to be a part of          the travel squad. It is the person’s obligation to get to that game.  If the person                 does not make it to the game, then that person will miss the following game, but         will attend game, sit with coach (s) and carry out any assigned tasks and go to 10             businesses and ask for donations.

 

  •         Severe violations will be delt with on a case by case basis and may result in          her/him being suspended temporarily or expelled from the Program.

 

  •         The Fourth of July Parade and the Relay for life will be mandatory events. 

 

              Aptos and Watsonville 4th of July Parades                         July 4th 8 am to ?

             

              Relay for life                                                                             July 20th and 21th

             

 

 

 

 

 

VII                                    FUNDRAISING

 

A.          All members (cheerleaders and staff) of the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program must participate in fundraising.

 

B.           Attendance rules will apply for absences and late arrival (see Article V, Attendance)

 

C.          All funds raised using Cabrillo College, Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program, Cabrillo College Cheerleading Squad, Cabrillo Cheer Squad, Cabrillo Cheer, Cabrillo Dance, Cabrillo Dance Team and other names which make reference to any part of cheerleading or dance belong to Cabrillo College and specifically the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.

 

D           The Cabrillo College Cheerleading program is aware of the financial hardship cheerleading can be for a Cheerleader/Student. Therefore the Cheerleading Program has come up with the following fundraising rules. 

 

The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program will do two types of fundraisers:

 

1.           Program Fundraisers- All funds raised at Program Fundraisers will go to the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.

 

2.           Split Fundraisers – All funds raised at Split Fundraisers will be split between the cheerleading program and each individual cheerleader who participates in the split fundraiser.

             

              a.           Split fundraiser policy will be:

 

i.            Funds raised will be split 30/70 – 30% will go to the cheerleading program and 70% will go to the Cheerleaders involved.

 
ii.            30% of all the funds collected at a split fundraiser will automatically go into the Cheerleading Program general fund.  The remaining 70% will be divided among each individual participant, according to what each individual collects in funds or time worked.
 
iii.           No cheerleader will be allowed to receive or get reimbursed funds collected that exceed his or her total cheerleading expenses. 
For example if Cheerleader collects $1000.00 fundraising and her total Cheerleading expenses were $850.  The remaining $150 stays in the cheerleading program general fund.

 

 

 

 

VIII                                   CHEERLEADING DEPOSIT

 

A.          Every Cheerleader who makes it into the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program is required to make a $150 deposit, this includes red shirts.

 

B            The cheerleading deposit of $150 is due by May 1st and is non-refundable.

             

C.          The cheerleading deposit will be distributed the following way;

             

              1.           $100.00 will go towards cheerleading camp deposit

              2.           $50.00 will go towards the Cheerleading Program.

 

D.          Cheerleader will not be allowed to participate if deposit is not turned in

 

 

 

IX                                      SUMMER CAMP

 

A.          SUMMER CAMP IS A REQUIRED EVENT -- IT IS NOT OPTIONAL!!

 

B.           The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program Director, Advisors and Coaches will make arrangements for summer camp.

 

C           Cheerleaders are responsible for all of their expenses involving Summer Camp; however the Cheerleading Program will make every attempt to keep this expense to a minimum.

 

D.          Cheerleaders must pay off all camp expenses two weeks prior to departing for camp or they will be dismissed from the cheerleading program and their student account will be frozen until all camp expenses are paid off.

 

F.           Program members may be asked to seek corporate support for camp expenses

 
 
 
 
 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

X                                       UNIFORM

 

 

A.          It is an honor and privilege to be a member of the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program at Cabrillo College and Cabrillo College recognizes this by allowing each member to represent Cabrillo College in our colors (Columbia Blue, Black and White).

 

B.           The Cabrillo College Cheerleading uniform is the most identifiable trademark of the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.  Members of the Cheerleading Program are highly visible symbols of Cabrillo College and should wear their uniform with pride and respect.

 

C.          Cabrillo College and the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program reserve the right to confiscate or deny a cheerleader the use of our uniform for inappropriate conduct, misuse or non-payment of funds due to The Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.

 
D           Uniform Design

 

1.           Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program Director will make all final decisions regarding the design of the Uniform.
 
2.           Every effort will be made to establish and maintain a uniform design, which is an identifiable trademark of the Cheerleading Program and Cabrillo College.

 

3.           All changes and upgrades to the uniform must maintain the trademark and tradition of the Cheerleading Program Uniform.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

E.           Uniform Expenses and Payment Deadlines

 

1.           Cheerleader is responsible for all of his/her uniform expenses, however the Cheerleading Program will make every attempt to keep this expense to a minimum.

 

2            A portion of the cheerleaders fundraising efforts may be used to help pay off uniform expenses, but ultimately the cheerleader is responsible for all uniform expenses and not the program.

 

3.           The first uniform deposit of $100 is due on August 1.  The second uniform deposit of $100 is due September and the third uniform deposit of $100 is due September 15.

 
4.           Cheerleader must pay all uniform expenses by September 15 at 5pm
 
5.           Payment extensions may be granted in extreme circumstances, but must be petitioned for to the program director no later than July 1 at 6 pm.
 
6            No payment extensions will be granted after July 1 at 5pm.

 

7.           Cheerleaders without extensions and who have not paid off their uniform by September 15 will be dismissed from the Cheerleading Program and conditions under Article VIII, E, 10 will also apply.

 

8.           Cheerleaders with extensions who have not paid by October 1, at 6 pm will be dismissed from the Cheerleading Program and conditions under Article VIII, E, 10 will also apply. 

 

9            Once the uniform order is placed, it cannot and will not be canceled and the cheerleader is responsible for the entire amount of the uniform. 

 

10          Should a cheerleader fail to maintain a position in the program for any reason, he/she is still responsible for the entire expense and Cabrillo College and the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program may seek restitution.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

F.                         Uniform Appearance and Upkeep

 

1.           Uniform must be maintained clean and functional at all times.

 

2.           No alterations to the uniform will be allowed unless approved by program director. 

 

3.           Unauthorized alteration will be dealt with disciplinary action and any alteration corrections will be done at the Cheerleaders own expense.  If alteration cannot be corrected cheerleader will have to purchase the garment again.

 

4.           Each person is to practice good personal hygiene and be well groomed.

 

5.           Male Members must adhere to the following:

 

a.           A mustache or goatee is permitted provided that the male had the mustache or goatee during May try-outs or grew it during the summer on vacation. They must be well groomed at all times
b.           Attempts to grow facial hair during season will not be tolerated.
c.           No beards will be permitted.
d.           Hair must be short or lean-cut in hair styling.
e.           No earrings.
f.            Piercing are permitted provided that the male had them during May try-outs, but must never be visible
g.           All piercing jewelry must be removed or taped
h.           No jewelry or watches

                            i.            No body piercing (navel, tongue, nostrils, eyelids etc…)

                            j.            No visible tattoos

                            k.           No Gum or Candy

                            l.            Dress uniformly to other males                 

 

              6.           Female Members must adhere to the following:

 

a.           No earrings

b.           No jewelry and watches

                            c.           No fake nails

d.           No nails beyond sports length. Cheerleader must be able to see skin between ends of fingernails and tips of fingers.

                            e.           Piercing are permitted provided that the female had them during                                                                       May try-outs, but must never be visible.

                            f.            All piercing jewelry must be removed or taped.

                            g.           No visible tattoos

                            h.           No Gum or Candy

                            i.            Dress uniformly to other females, including hairstyle and make-up.

                                           

XI.                                     PRACTICES

 

A.          Regularly scheduled practices will be scheduled by program director and this will include holidays not scheduled as days off by the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program.

 

B.           Program director will determine which holidays do not interfere with Competition and Game practices and only these holidays will be taken off by the entire squad. 

 

C.          NO practices will be excused during the Competition and Intercollegiate Season.

 

D.          All vacations must be taken prior to the beginning of the competition and intercollegiate    season.

 

E            The Competition Season runs from two weeks prior to leaving for summer camp through the end of the last Competition or intercollegiate game, whichever comes last.

 

F.           Proper Practice attire is:

             

              a.           Secure ponytail

             

              b.           No Gum or Candy

             

              c.           Nails sport length

             

              d.           White Top/ T-shirt

             

              e.           Black Bottoms (shorts, leggings spandex, form fitting sweat pants)

             

              f.            No Spaghetti Straps or Tank Tops (men and women)

             

              g.           White socks      

             

              h.           Cheer shoes

             

              i.            When wearing shorts you must wear kick pants or spandex shorts underneath.

 

              j.            Men -                  Must bring 2 or more T-shirts and 1 towel to practice

 

                            Women -           Must wear bra or sports bra to practice

 

 

 

 

G.          Cheerleaders will stretch, run and do a work out at every practice, unless program director deems it necessary and a priority to work on or do something else that day.

 

H.          No talking will be allowed during instruction.

 

I.            No cell phone or pager usage will be allowed during practice.

 

  • Once practice has started all cell phones and pagers should be in silent mode.

 

  • Only program staff will be allowed to use cell phones or pagers but they must be in silent or vibration mode during practice.

 

L.           Team Captains may use their cell phones for only the first 20 minutes of practice for         calling or receiving calls from late or absent cheerleaders.  Abuse of this privilege will        result in the termination of privilege.        

 

M.          Practice time is limited. Each cheerleader may not have enough time to perfect everything they learn at practice during the time allotted.  It is the responsibility of each cheerleader to master and perfect skills and routines learned at practice.

 

N.          Not having enough time at practice will not be an excuse for not knowing routines.

 

 

O.          All Cheerleaders are expected to practice (excluding stunts and gymnastics) on their own, with teammates or by scheduling extra practice times with coaches, captains or teammates, if they need extra help or time to master their skill or routines.  

 

P.           Practice will consist of the following:       

Laps, jumping jacks, stretching, push-ups, stomach exercises, jumps, drills, sideline cheers, half time routines, stunts, gymnastics and competition routines.

 

 
 
 
 
 
 

 

 
 
 
 

 

 

XII                                    STUNTING AND GYMNASTICS

 

A.          Stunting and gymnastics is only allowed at Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program practices, events and competitions under the supervision of the cheerleading program director, coach (es)  or designated advisor (s).

 

B            When stunting or doing gymnastics all of the cheerleader’s attention must be on the task at hand. 

 

C.          A Cheerleader should NEVER hit the floor, during a stunt.

 

D.          If there IS a mat and a cheerleader hits the floor, all cheerleader (s) responsible for catching he/she will immediately be disciplined accordingly, if they do not break the fall with their own bodies.

 

E.           If there is NO mat and a cheerleader hits the floor, all cheerleader (s) responsible for catching he/she will immediately be dismissed from the Cheerleading Program and they will have to turn in their uniform to the Cabrillo College Cheerleading Program, if they do-not break the fall with their own bodies.

 

F.           All stunts and gymnastics must be demonstrated consistently to the program director before use in any game, event or competition.

 

g            It is extremely recommended that each member do supervised strength training and conditioning outside of practice, because it will improve stunting and gymnastic skills.  Efforts will be made to reserve the Cabrillo College weight room but due to class scheduling this might not be available.

 

 

 

XIII                                   SAFETY

 

A.          Safety must be a priority at all times.

 

B.           Each Cheerleader must be physically and mentally prepared at all times.

 

C.          If a cheerleader is sick, injured or emotionally distressed they should not be performing in order to prevent injury to themselves or a fellow teammate.

 

D           If a cheerleader is sick, injured or emotionally not well they will sit out practices, games, events or competitions, until they are physically and emotionally fit to perform.           

 

E            Cheerleaders should reframe from dangerous activities and sports.  Activities with high accident rates may end your cheerleading season early.

 

 

XIV.                                  EVENTS

 

A.          An Event is any game, fundraiser, competition, rally, banquet or any other activity where any Cabrillo College Cheer Program Member represents Cabrillo College.

 

B.           Cheerleaders will meet in sufficient time prior to each event and accordingly stretch, practice, organize or coordinate prior to the event.

 

C.          The meeting time and place designated for events will be set accordingly by the Program Director.

 

D.          Tardiness will result in Jumps being assessed (see Article V 1-6 "Attendance").

 

E.           The following event rules also apply:

 

1.           PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO SUPPORT INTER-COLLEGIATE TEAMS

 

2.           The Cheerleading Safety Manual published by the American Association of                                     Cheerleading Coaches & Advisors (AACCA) guidelines will govern the squad's                                          performances and practices.

 

3.           Pyramids will comply with AACCA, tournament policies, the host school's policies during a road game or the policies of the governing body in a competition

 

4.           Squad members will not converse unnecessarily with the student body or spectators since this hinders their attention to the game or competition.

 

5.           No food, beverages, personal belongs and equipment must be in view of spectators once squad begins performance.

             

              6.           No cell phone or pager usage will be allowed during an event and once the                                        event has started all cell phones and pagers should be in silent mode.  This                                        includes captains.

 

  •         Only program staff will be allowed to use cell phones or pagers but they must be              in silent or vibration mode.

 

8.           Team Captains Will Not be allowed to use cell phones or pagers during an event.

 

9.           Equipment for games or competitions will be handled before and after by squad members designated by the coach (es).

 

10.         In all cases, the Cheerleaders actions are under the Captain's direct supervision during the on-field and on-court time

 

11.         Cheerleader must give their undivided attention to the game or competition

XV                                     MEDICAL

 

A.          Each Cheerleader must have a physical, medical history questionnaire and if applicable a medical insurance form on file with the cheerleading program.

 

B.           All Cheerleaders will receive their physicals at no charge through Cabrillo College Health Service (Room 912).  No personal doctor’s notes or forms will be accepted for initial yearly physical.

 

C.          Students may get future examinations from personal doctors but all doctor’s notes and forms will be subject to review through Student Health Services.

 

D.          All forms must be submitted and reviewed by the Program Director before a student may participate in any Cabrillo College Cheerleading Squad practice or activity.

 

E.           The final decision on a person's physical qualifications, participation in the program or reason for rejection due to medical reasons rests solely upon being cleared by Student Health Services.

 

F.           All injuries received during practices, games or competitions must be reported to Student Health Services, where an examination will take place and treatment if applicable may be prescribed.
