Darwin Constantino

Charlotte Achen

For Darwin Constantino, attending Cabrillo College and joining the Student Senate have empowered him to discover his leadership abilities as well as his passion for helping people.

Darwin was born in the Philippines. When he was quite young, his family moved to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, where he grew up.  In 2007, Darwin and his family moved to Santa Cruz; he developed a real appreciation for this area. "Santa Cruz grows on you. It is a great location with such friendly people,” he said. While attending high school at Soquel High, Darwin developed an interest in architecture.  After taking a chemistry class with Mr. Siddens his junior year, chemistry became his new interest and passion.

Darwin decided that Cabrillo College was the best choice for him, as he wanted to remain in Santa Cruz County. It was also more financially feasible than other options. When Darwin started at Cabrillo College, he declared Chemical Engineering as his major. Engineering Program Chair Jo-Ann Panzardi and other instructors in the Engineering Department have helped him every step of the way to achieve his academic goals.

One of Darwin’s positive Cabrillo experiences was the time he spent working as a Supplemental Instruction Tutor for the STARS program. He tutored math students in class 2-3 times a week.  It was there that he discovered his love for helping and teaching others. His experience with the STARS program has led to subsequent tutoring jobs in physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering.

Another empowering experience was joining the Student Senate at Cabrillo College. Initially, he had no idea what he was getting into, but he proudly admits it was the best thing he has ever done.  Before that, he was shy and withdrawn.  Working in the Student Senate put him into a position of leadership and responsibility, where he felt empowered to represent his fellow Cabrillo students to the best of his ability.  Darwin continues to advocate for his peers and supports programs that benefit the student body.

In spring 2012, he was elected Treasurer of the Student Senate. He felt this role was best suited for him, since he is an organized person that enjoys working with numbers. That semester, the Student Senate presented him with the "Outstanding Student Leadership Award" for his hard work and dedication to the college.  Being a part of the Student Senate has uncovered a passion and drive that Darwin didn’t previously know he had.  He is now active in several clubs, organizations and programs at Cabrillo College, including: the Honors Transfer Program, ACCESS, AGS Honors Society, the Business Club and the Cabrillo Symphonic Winds Orchestra

This year is Darwin's final year at Cabrillo College. He has applied to transfer to several UC schools, but would ideally like to attend UC Davis, within the Chemical Engineering/Material Science program.  After his undergraduate degree, he would like to pursue graduate studies in a related field.  As for a career, he is interested in the research and development of pharmaceuticals in hopes of advancing medicine and enhancing public health.

Darwin's message to all current and prospective Cabrillo students:

"Open your eyes to what your school has to offer. Cabrillo College is filled with programs and organizations devoted to helping you succeed. Being more involved in your school while staying academically focused will only better your chances of achieving your goals."
