High School Senior Conference Will Help Graduates Plan Their Future

WATSONVILLE, CA - The Watsonville High School Seniors’ Conference will be held on April 19 and 20 at Watsonville High School and Cabrillo College's Watsonville Center. Representatives from 60 organizations will offer workshops about the array of possibilities available to high school graduates, including public and private universities and colleges, job training facilities, and employers from around the Central Coast area.

The annual event has been co-hosted by the Watsonville High School and Cabrillo College since 1991. This year's theme is "How Do You Set Yourself Apart to Get the Job You Want?"

"The event will provide seniors with a comprehensive list of last-minute ideas of what they should be thinking about for next fall," said Dan Dickman, Watsonville High career counselor. "We as counselors have a strong interest in providing adequate information so that students have a smooth transition."

“Education and training for these students will have a lasting positive effect on their lives and on the future of the community. This event seeks to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishment of a high school diploma while emphasizing that this will only be the first of many accomplishments throughout their lifetime,” said Dr. Shirley Flores-Munoz, Coordinator of Cabrillo College’s Pathway to Health Careers.

Cabrillo College will have representatives on hand to explain the application, registration and financial aid application processes.

There also will be inspirational guest speakers and cultural musical performances. Gabriella Gutierrez, Seattle University professor and Eric LoMonaco, Directory of Radiology, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, will encourage the students to keep their expectations high by sharing their personal stories about overcoming financial and social barriers. UCSC Los Mejicas and CSUMB Gospel Choir will perform.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. each day, with workshops being held at Watsonville High, 250 E. Beach St., and Cabrillo's Watsonville Center, 318 Union St. The career fair will be at the Vets Hall, 215 E. Beach St.
