Press Releases Spring 2005 CONTACT: Cathy Summa, Director, Marketing & Communications May 13, 2005
Cabrillo College Foundation Awards Record Amount APTOS, Over 500 scholarships will be awarded, each honoring an individual, family, club, business, or organization. Each scholarship has a story behind it but the common thread is a belief in the value of education. This year’s keynote speaker will be Rachael Spencer. Spencer established the Rachael A. Spencer Re-entry Endowed Scholarship in 1990 to assist women continuing their education at Cabrillo College. Spencer currently sits on the Cabrillo College Governing Board (representing Area IV), and previously served as president of the Cabrillo College Foundation. “These scholarships are so very important to our students, many of whom overcome great challenges in pursuit of their college education. I am proud that we are able to offer one of the largest community college scholarship programs in California,” said Spencer. Speakers at Friday’s ceremony will include Cabrillo College President Brian King, Cabrillo College Vice President of Student Services Manuel Osorio, Cabrillo College Foundation Past President Jess Brown, English Instructor Dr. Ekua Omosupe, and scholarship award winners Maria Romero and Eric Barbour. Romero is the recipient of the Rachael A. Spencer Re-entry Endowed Scholarship and Barbour is receiving the Lionel “Bud” Lenox II Memorial Scholarship and the Carl and Jacqueline Conelly Endowed Scholarship. Romero has returned to college with plans to receive her Associate of Science degree and finish the two-year nursing program at Cabrillo, before transferring to San Jose State to earn a bachelor’s degree. She is raising a family, excelling in her studies and still has time to be part of a group that teaches Aztec dancing. This scholarship will greatly help Romero as she pursues her dream of becoming a nurse. Barbour is working toward a double major in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at either UC Berkeley or UC Davis. He is a member of the Alpha Gamma Sigma California Community College Honor Society, is working to support his family, and is active in his community. The scholarship review committee is comprised of faculty and staff from various departments and the ranking is based on scholastic accomplishments, community service, academic potential, and need. Three new endowed scholarships being awarded this year are the Betsy McCarty Nursing Endowed Scholarship, the Karen Tossavainen Memorial Printmaking Endowed Scholarship and the Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz Re-entry Endowed Scholarship. The Betsy McCarty Nursing Endowed Scholarship was established to honor McCarty’s years of accomplishment and her unwavering commitment to public health. The scholarship will support a student in the two-year nursing program at Cabrillo College. The Karen Tossavainen Memorial Printmaking Endowed Scholarship was established with gifts from colleagues, friends and family in her memory. Tossavainen was a tenured art department faculty member and a gifted printmaking teacher who built a rich printmaking program uncommon amongst community colleges. The scholarship will support a student in printmaking at Cabrillo College. The Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz organization established the Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz Re-entry Scholarship in 1987. In January 2005, Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz endowed the Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz Re-entry Endowed Scholarship enabling the scholarship to be awarded in perpetuity. The Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz Re-entry Endowed Scholarship will assist Cabrillo College re-entry women students. This year the American Dream Scholarship, for high school students entering Cabrillo College as full-time students, is being awarded to more students than ever before. The scholarship, which is sponsored by Ow Family Properties, is funding 56 scholarships for Santa Cruz County students, nearly double the amount of last year. The Ow family has been awarding scholarships to students since May 1989. Over the years, 325 students have received the American Dream Scholarship, for a total of $164,500. Cabrillo College President Brian King and Foundation Past President Jess Brown will present the award certificates. The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m., Friday, May 20, on the lawn behind the Sesnon House.
