Cabrillo College Hires Former Big Leaguer as Head Baseball Coach Aptos, CA—Former Major League Pitcher Andy Messersmith starts Monday, August 29 as Cabrillo’s new Head Baseball Coach. Messersmith pitched for the Angels, 1966-72, the L.A. Dodgers, 1973-75, the Atlanta Braves, 1976-77, and the New York Yankees, 1978-79. He was selected four times to pitch for the National League All-Stars. When he was with the Dodgers he pitched the opening game of the World Series. When he was with Yankees he pitched the last game of the World Series and won the series. Messersmith previously coached at Cabrillo from 1986 through 1991. Cabrillo College Athletics Director Dale Murray is delighted to have Messersmith back. “He proved himself to be a topnotch coach when he was here before. He is as good as any on-the-field coach that I have seen,” said Murray. Messersmith is looking forward to working with students again. “I really enjoy coaching community college students,” Messersmith said. “Cabrillo is a great school and it is 10 minutes from my house,” he added.
