Cabrillo College Raises $6,000 For Hurricane Victims

APTOS, CALIF—Yesterday, Cabrillo College raised approximately $6,000 for survivors of Hurricane Katrina at a student and staff sponsored barbeque luncheon. Cabrillo College President Brian King, vice-presidents and managers cooked and served approximately 500 meals.

Joyce Anderson, board chair of the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross is very appreciative of Cabrillo’s efforts. “The generosity of our entire community is exceptional and has been greatly appreciated,” she said. “This week alone we are deploying 65 people from the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the Red Cross to provide disaster relief in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. One hundred percent of all of the donations are going to help the survivors,” said Anderson.

Student Services Vice President Manuel Osorio helped organize the fundraising effort. “The Cabrillo College community is very generous. It was gratifying to see the outpouring of support,” said Osorio.

Cabrillo is planning more fundraising events, including a benefit concert on October 9, at 3 p.m. in the Cabrillo College Theater. The college hopes to raise a total of $10,000 for hurricane survivors.

The food was donated for the event by Cabrillo College managers, the Associated Student Senate, and Fresh and Natural Catering.

Anyone interested in volunteering to participate in hurricane relief efforts can contact the Santa Cruz Chapter of the Red Cross at 831-462-2881, ext. 24.
