Cabrillo Offers Game Programming Certificate Students will create their own 2-d animated games APTOS—(January 19, 2006)—To help meet a growing market demand for computer game developers, Cabrillo College is introducing “Game Programming in Java,” a new course aimed at teaching the next generation of programmers how to create 2-dimensional animations with artificial intelligence. “There is so much work now for game developers of all kinds that game programming has been adopted as a ‘real career path,’ ” said Susan Nerton, an instructor and chair of Cabrillo’s Computer Science, Computer and Information Systems. “It’s a good time to get into programming,” said Ed Parrish, Cabrillo computer programming instructor. Parrish developed the course to integrate the programming techniques commonly used in programming games such as Super Mario Bros. and Space Invaders. “There are jobs out there again and it’s a good time to learn new techniques,” Parrish said. “You have to know a lot more now to get a computer job then you used to.” The course, which begins in February, will include programming techniques for graphics animation, sound, artificial intelligence, user interfaces and networking. It is one of the requirements for earning a Game Programming certificate which is now offered by Cabrillo. Students will get to create several original games using new programming techniques as part of their required coursework. The class, to be held Monday evenings, 6-9:10 p.m., is open to anyone, including high school students, with some experience in an object-oriented programming language such as Java or C++. Students will develop their own arcade game and create characters for platform games as well which allow characters to jump over virtual terrain and grab things and go into battle. “There’s nothing like working on your own project and having a couple games to show for it when you’re through,” Parrish said.
