Press Releases 2006 CONTACT: Mary Planding September 12, 2006 Cabrillo College Board of Trustees APTOS, CA— During its regular monthly meeting held yesterday evening, Cabrillo College’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved a lease with Scotts Valley Partners for the college’s new Scotts Valley Center. Cabrillo’s new center is the fulfillment of the vision and commitment to Scotts Valley by long-time area resident, Claudine Wildman, a member of Cabrillo’s Board of Trustee. “Cabrillo’s new center will enable Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley residents to obtain a first-class college education conveniently located nearby along with the ability to transfer all of their academic credits to various four-year California universities such as UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State, CSU Monterey Bay and others,” stated Wildman. Wildman also actively participated in discussions with neighbors and local businesses in the area and declared, “At Cabrillo, we take our responsibility to be a good community member very seriously. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the City of Scotts Valley.” The 3-year lease covers 7,350 square feet of space located on the first floor at 104 Whispering Pines Drive and has an option to renew at the end of the term. Funding for the lease comes from Redevelopment Agency funds and the college expects increased enrollment fees to cover on-going operational costs. Located a block away from the county’s Metro Bus station and a stone’s throw away from Mt. Hermon Road, the new center will provide easy access for San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley residents. “A Scotts Valley Center has been a part of Cabrillo’s long-term Master Plan as was the Watsonville Center. Being responsive to student and community’s needs is at the heart of our mission and we are delighted to be of even greater service to Santa Cruz County from north to south,” stated Brian King, president and superintendent of Cabrillo. Vic Bogard, Jr., president emeritus of Bogard Constructions says, “We are thrilled that Cabrillo is opening up a center in Scotts Valley and we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the college.” “As a landlord and a land owner, we are excited to have Cabrillo as a tenant. We feel it’s an excellent use of the space and great for that part of the county,” affirmed Brad Bogard, Bogard Construction’s executive vice president of operations. For the upcoming spring semester, Cabrillo will initially offer classes to accommodate a maximum of 100 students starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Current plans call for 4 classrooms, a reception area and offices for faculty and staff. Admission, registration and counseling services are planned to be available on site to assist students during the last two weeks of early registration and during the late registration period for each semester. At present classes tentatively scheduled for the semester beginning February 5, 2007 are: accounting, anthropology, art history, business, communications studies, English, finance, health science, history, horticulture, mathematics, philosophy, Pilates, political science, Spanish and yoga. The final list of classes will be available in the spring 2007 Schedule of Classes as well as through Cabrillo’s online registration system known as WebAdvisor. Classes have been selected based upon the results of market research, enrollment patterns and feedback received from north county residents.
