Innovative Dance Repertory Course Breaks New Ground
An inclusive course for students with and without disabilities

Wintersession, January 2-23, 2007

Aptos, CA— Cabrillo College Dance Department is offering an inclusive Dance Repertory course entitled “Making Moves/Breaking New Ground”, where both students with and without disabilities will come together to explore and push the boundaries of how they dance. Students who want to choreograph will have opportunities to contribute their ideas within this format of innovative collaboration. The group will work together to create a lecture demonstration performance that illustrates inclusive dance, which will be performed at the American College Dance Festival conference (ACDF) at San Francisco State University on January 18, and at Cabrillo College on January 23.

“This course is about raising our expectations and expanding our ideas of dance, not about dropping standards,” instructor Sharon Took-Zozaya explains. “Everyone will be expected to dance full out, to the best of their ability, whatever their skill level, ability or disability. Experienced dancers and beginners, with and without disabilities—all are encouraged to join us.”

The inclusive approach to dance and choreography embraced in this course is on the cutting edge of work being done here in California. It is already well established in the UK however, where Sharon has worked extensively with mainstream and special needs groups from 1988-2003. Her new choreography for two dancers and a wheelchair will be performed at the Cabrillo Fall Dance Concert, December 1-2 at the Cabrillo Theater.

Dance Repertory (section 49702), Making Moves/Breaking New Ground, will meet January 2-23, 2007, TWTH, 9:30 am-12:50 pm. Registration begins October 31. To apply and register, go to www.cabrillo.edu and click on “Apply and Register”. For more information about this class, contact Sharon Took-Zozaya: stzozaya [at] cabrillo.edu or (831) 477-3501.
