Cabrillo College Goes "Green" Offering Energy Alternatives

APTOS, CA—For the first time this spring Cabrillo College is offering “green” classes in energy alternatives, both in the Construction and Energy Management Program and through Cabrillo Extension.

Cabrillo Extension, known for providing a wide variety of not-for-credit community education classes, now offers three half-day workshops in alternative energies this March and April—“Biodiesel Fuel Alternatives,”  “Solar and Renewable Energy for Home and Business,” and “Green Transportation Options.” The classes will help students make informed decisions about energy choices for home, business and transportation and will educate participants in taking advantage of California rebates in energy alternatives. The workshops are taught by community experts--Jurah Roussopoulos, co-owner of Mountain Feed and Farm in Ben Lomond; Joe Jordan, of NASA Ames Research Center and Cabrillo faculty; and Karsten Mueller, Ph.D. of Ecology Action.

“We wanted Cabrillo Extension to reflect both what the Santa Cruz community is embracing as well as what is happening with the environment,” said Suzanne Dyer, Community Education Coordinator. “Choosing alternative energies is important for the future of not only our own county, but for the world, and begins with our individual choices.”

The Construction and Energy Management Program at Cabrillo College has hired a new faculty member, Steve Murphy, who specializes in green construction. The for-credit course begins on February 6. CEM 162, entitled “Sustainable Buildings, Home Performance, and the Environment,” introduces sustainable building resources and applications, LEED certification requirements, home performance concepts, California energy codes, green building and their relationships to the environment and residential construction.

A complete list of Extension classes offered can be found in the new Spring 2007 Cabrillo Extension booklet being sent to homes in Santa Cruz County in January. Classes begin from early February and run through May. All extension classes are fee-supported, and early registration prevents classes from being cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Individuals can learn more about Cabrillo Extension’s classes and register online at www.cabrillo-extension.org or call (831) 479-6331.

To register for the Construction and Energy Management courses or for any for-credit class at Cabrillo College, call (831) 479-6201 or visit www.cabrillo.edu.
