Cabrillo Trustee Appointed to National Committee on Diversity

Aptos, CA--Rebecca Garcia, Cabrillo College Trustee (Watsonville) was recently appointed to serve on the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Diversity Committee by Elizabeth Chen, committee chair.

The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern more than 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States, Canada, and England.

Cabrillo College President Brian King extended his congratulations to Garcia. “Cabrillo is fortunate to be represented by a leader with such a passionate commitment to diversity,” he said.

Garcia is excited about serving on the ACCT Diversity Committee.

“I have been a voice for diversity and equity locally at Cabrillo, at the state level as a member of the California Community College Trustees Board of Directors and now I am honored to take this voice to the national level,” said Garcia.

The ACCT Diversity Committee ensures leadership for the involvement of historically underrepresented diverse populations within the governance activities of ACCT. It promotes respect for and acceptance of diverse individuals and promotes awareness and educational opportunity for underrepresented populations. It advises the ACCT Board by strengthening the links with the minority membership, identifying issues that require member input, and recommending strategies to gather input.

“I am proud of Rebecca’s statewide influence and commitment to diversity. All of Cabrillo is extremely honored to have one of its trustees voicing our values on a national level. She will be very effective in communicating her passion towards diversity.” declared Rachael Spencer, Chair of the Cabrillo College Governing Board.

The Diversity Committee meets twice each year to made its report to the ACCT Board of Directors. Members are encouraged to attend all ACCT Board meetings. Garcia’s appointment is an interim position until an election is held at the Regional Caucus during the Community College Leadership Congress in San Diego this September.
