COLLEGE RAMPS UP FOR CABRILLOARTS SUMMER WORKSHOPS
Aclaimed Artists Michael Croft and Juan Fuentes Preview the 2007 Workshops

APTOS, CA—Two artists who will be guest presenters in this summer’s CabrilloArts Workshops, will give an illustrated lecture/presentation on Friday, April 13, at 7:00 p.m. in room 454 (Forum building) on the Aptos Campus.

The event is a preview of the exciting workshops and guest artists that will be in residence during the second annual CabrilloArts Workshops.  Garnering acclaim in its first year, the workshops provide an intensive learning environment that combines ten days of daily classes and labs with master teachers and experts in their fields. The 2007 workshops also include a dance session with Tandy Beal and music sessions with Phil Collins, Susan Bruckner, and an introduction to the use of “Reason” software for music composition and arranging.

Michael Croft, Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Arizona, will discuss Automata, (plural for automaton), mechanized animated figures operated by clockwork.  Contemporary automata take the form of small, hand-activated figures that employ simple mechanisms to animate characters or scenes with a whimsical or quirky twist. Discovering Automata during a trip to London in 1989, he began to collect the work of contemporary artists to use in his classes to introduce basic kinetic movement. In recent

years, his research and construction of automata have become an obsession.

Printmaker Juan Fuentes will discuss his involvement with exploring social issues through Linoleum Cut Printmaking process. Juan has been producing art since the 1970s. His posters are part of the Chicano Poster movement and have been exhibited in the Smithsonian, the Mexican Museum and the Center for Political Graphics. He is currently an instructor of graphic arts at the City College of San Francisco and is also the Director of Mission Grafica, the printmaking component of the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco.

A short presentation on last summer’s workshop will be shown and the 2007 program will be introduced. Suggested Donation: $5.00 at the door.
