CABRILLO COLLEGE INVITES PARTICIPATION IN OPEN FORUMS
FOR SELECTION OF NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT SERVICES
Tuesday, April 17 from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm, Erica Schilling Forum, Room 450
APTOS, CA—Cabrillo College invites community members, faculty, staff and students to participate in the process of selecting its next Vice President of Student Services by attending the Open Forum being held on Tuesday, April 17 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm in the Erica Schilling Forum, Room 450.
Shawn Ogimachi, the college’s Director of Counseling and chair of the Search and Selection committee, will serve as facilitator. The forum will begin with an introduction by Ogimachi, a five-minute opening statement by the candidate, a period of questions from the floor and a five-minute closing statement by the candidate.
The candidate, Dr. May Kuang-chi Chen, currently Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment Management at the Community College of Baltimore County, will appear at Tuesday’s open forum.
Dr. May Kuang-chi Chen
Through a circuitous route, Dr. May Kuang-chi Chen went from earning her psychology degree at Chung-Yuan University in Taiwan to holding an administrative post at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). Chen has been the assistant vice chancellor for strategic enrollment management at CCBC since 2001. She works with various college constituencies to develop and implement recruitment, admissions, retention, and transfer initiatives to ensure a successful and diverse student body.
She also has been playing an important role in minority achievement for Baltimore County public school students through her participation in the school system’s Minority Achievement Advisory Group, in human relation enhancement serving on the Baltimore County Human Relation Commission, and in improving regional K-16 education systems through her contributions to the College Board’s Middle States Regional Council.
Prior to coming to CCBC, Chen worked for 10 years with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), as a dean of academic affairs and enrollment management on a college campus, and as the district-wide research director. She also worked with the New Jersey State Department of Higher Education as assistant director of policy research and statewide planning, and as a program officer for Iowa State University.
Chen made a long-term commitment to community college student access and success while working in New Jersey. Through a comprehensive data analysis and planning process, she was struck by the huge gap existing between those “haves” and “have-nots,” and then fully convinced that community colleges would be the “key solution” for closing the gap. Subsequently, she decided to advocate for community college students by assuming the leadership in the Office of Research and Planning and LACCD.
Over the past 20 years, Chen’s leadership experience at community colleges has expanded to areas including strategic planning, policy research and formulation, data compilation and analysis, enrollment and student services, teaching and learning, faculty and staff supervision and support, curriculum development, financial and personnel management, and resource development.
Chen is an experienced presenter at various workshops and conferences. For example, she was the keynote speaker for the 2007 Asian Month Celebration at Goucher College in Baltimore. At the event, she not only related her personal journey through a speech entitled “Identity revolution and evolution: Reflections on being an Asian-American in the U.S.” but also performed Asian dances with other dancers to further illustrate the richness of Asian culture
