CABRILLO COLLEGE TRUSTEE ELECTED PRESIDENT
OF CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRUSTEES BOARD

APTOS, CA—Rebecca Garcia, trustee of Area V for Cabrillo College, was elected as President of the California Community College Trustees Board at its annual Trustees Conference held in San Francisco.

The California Community College Trustees (CCCT) and the Chief Executive Officers of the California Community Colleges (CEOCCC) are the two major organizations that make up the Community College League of California, sharing a common mission, staff and fiscal resources.

“Rebecca Garcia’s leadership, energy and enthusiasm for community colleges were recognized by community college trustees statewide when they re-elected her to this board,” said Scott Lay, President and Chief Executive Officer of the League. "I am glad when persons such as Rebecca, who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to student access and education, are selected for the board. I am especially please that Rebecca will be President of the board this year. The commitment to diversity which she brings to the presidency will help set policy that addresses the needs of all students."

Garcia declares, "I am so honored to have this privilege of being in a leadership position at the state level. I will be working more closely with the Chancellor's Office and the Board of Governors. Issues the CCCT will look at addressing include implementation of the System Strategic Plan, passage of the Community College Initiative scheduled for the February 2008 election and supporting the community college districts in their implementation of diversity. It also gives visibility to all the fine work Cabrillo is doing. It will be an exciting year for the college and for me."

“We are delighted to have Rebecca advocate the interests of community colleges,” stated Brian King, President and Superintendent of Cabrillo College, “In this new and very important role, her dedication to serving the needs of students is central the work the CCCT will be taking on under her leadership.”

The CCCT board meets five times each year to take action on education policy issues before the state Board of Governors and the Legislature. The board also provides policy direction to staff concerning statewide education policy, research initiatives, publications, workshops, and conferences.

The League is a nonprofit organization whose voluntary membership includes all California community college districts. It is based in the state's capital and provides important services to the community colleges and local districts geared toward helping them fulfill their missions and promote community college education in their communities and throughout California.
