Cheryl Anderson and Cabrillo Choruses Invited to Play Carnegie Hall
Send-off Concerts Scheduled in Santa Cruz & Carmel on June 9 & 10

APTOS, CA—On June 9 and 10, Cheryl Anderson and the Cabrillo College Symphonic Chorus and Cabrillo Youth Chorus will present a special weekend of concerts celebrating their upcoming debut at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City in mid-June.

Carnegie, Here We Come! Send Off Concerts will take place Saturday June 9 at The Hidden Valley Institute in Carmel, and repeat on Sunday June 10 at the First Congregational Church in Santa Cruz. The concerts will highlight the original musical work, The Peace of Wild Things by Imant Raminsh, which has been chosen as the selection for the Carnegie Hall performance.  The Carmel and Santa Cruz concerts will include the Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra, as well as the premier of an original dance creation performed by The Monterey DanceCollective.  The dance choreography, by Deanna Ross, is meant to capture the spirit of the music and bring to life the poetry, both visually and kinesthetically. There will also be a special appearance by Cabrillo’s Cantiamo! of Norman Dinerstein’s poignant Frogs, derived from Behn Haiku.

In 2005, Cheryl and her husband John Anderson, conductor of the Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra, commissioned the master work: The Peace of Wild Things, by Canadian composer Imant Raminsh. Raminsh based his composition on the poetry of Wendell Berry, e.e. cummings, and local, award-winning poet, Morton Marcus.  The work premiered in May 2006 in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

The Peace of Wild Things is the perfect combination of words and music,” says Cheryl Anderson, “The poetry really resonated with all the singers and we knew it was the piece we had to perform in New York.”

Under Anderson’s direction, over 200 members of the Cabrillo Symphonic and Youth Choruses will travel to New York City in June. The choral groups have been hand-selected and offered a special invitation to perform as part of the Mid-American Invitational Concert Series at Carnegie Hall on June 19, 2007.

About Cheryl Anderson: Ms. Anderson is Director of Choral Activities at Cabrillo College.  In her 16-year tenure at Cabrillo she is the Founder/Director of Cabrillo Youth Chorus Project, Cabrillo Opera, Voice Master Class, and Renaissance Consort.  She has received the Board of Governors' Meritorious Teaching Award, has been named to Who's Who six times, and routinely receives the Alpha Gamma Sigma student award for Outstanding Teaching. Cabrillo’s Youth Chorus, Symphonic Chorus, and Cantiamo! have all performed with the Cabrillo Music Festival and routinely sing with the Santa Cruz County Symphony and Ensemble Monterey Chamber Orchestra. The choirs have also sung throughout the world, including St. Peter's Basilica, St. Mark's Cathedral, and the great concert halls of Western and Eastern Europe.  Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus sang the Berlin premiere of Eric Whitacre's Paradise Lost in 2003.
