Cabrillo College Announces New Music Technology Program APTOS, CA—On Friday July 13, Cabrillo College announced the development of the new Music Technology and Recording Arts Program, as well as the sponsorship by Universal Audio of one of the main recording studios in the new Arts Education Classrooms Complex. Dr. Brian King, President of Cabrillo College, welcomed Matt Ward, President of Universal Audio, a leader in the recording equipment industry, to a morning reception and a hard-hat walk through of the facilities. King, accompanied by Dan Martinez, Dean of Visual, Applied and Performing Arts, and James Durland, the music instructor who spearheaded the endeavor, were on hand to thank Universal Audio for their gift of cash and equipment of $10,000 to name a recording studio after the company in the Arts Education Classrooms Complex. “We are very excited to provide support for the new recording facility and upcoming recording program,” says Bill Putnum, Owner of Universal Audio. “Cabrillo has a long history and has been a vital part of the music community in Santa Cruz and beyond. We feel that the new facility will serve an important function in providing educational opportunities in the area of media production.” Naming of the new studios is just part of the excitement swirling around the development of the new Music Technology and Recording Arts Certificate and A.A. degree program, due to be offered by fall 2008, in the new facility. The two-year A.A. program will be designed to produce professional-level producers, engineers and musicians, while completing the academic requirements for transfer to higher education institutions as music majors and for general education. Students will be instructed in the state-of-the arts facility to produce projects at music industry standards. Students will also study music theory, piano, song writing, music appreciation and participate in performing groups. Workshop seminars will also be offered that will feature guest instructors with an emphasis on current music technology trends. Some of these exciting offerings have already been available to students as part of the CabrilloArts Summer Workshops. This summer features “Music and Computers: Reason”, which explores composing music electronically.
