Cabrillo College Welcomes New Vice President of Student Services APTOS, CA— Cabrillo College welcomes Dr. May Kuang-chi Chen as its new Vice President of Student Services. Chen started her new duties on July 16, replacing Manuel Osorio who retired in June. “Dr. Chen’s vast experience and in-depth expertise makes her an outstanding asset to the college,” says Cabrillo College President Brian King. “She has proven leadership skills, an unshakeable commitment to student success and is dedicated to excellence, in the tradition of Cabrillo College,” continues King. Through a circuitous route, Chen went from earning her psychology degree at Chung-Yuan University in Taiwan to being the assistant vice chancellor for strategic enrollment management at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). Chen has been at CCBC since 2001. While there, she worked with various college constituencies to develop and implement recruitment, admissions, retention and transfer initiatives to ensure a successful and diverse student body. “I am delighted to join such a first-rate educational institution as Cabrillo College,” declares Chen. ““I am looking forward to working closely with the college, the students and the entire community.” She also has played an important role in minority achievement for Baltimore County public school students through her participation in the school system’s Minority Achievement Advisory Group, in human relation enhancement serving on the Baltimore County Human Relation Commission, and in improving regional K-16 education systems through her contributions to the College Board’s Middle States Regional Council. Prior to coming to CCBC, Chen worked for 10 years with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) as a dean of academic affairs and enrollment management on a college campus and as the district-wide research director. She has also worked with other outstanding educational organizations such as the New Jersey State Department of Higher Education and Iowa State University. Chen is an experienced presenter at various workshops and conferences. Recently she was the keynote speaker for the 2007 Asian Month Celebration at Goucher College in Baltimore where she related her personal journey through a speech entitled “Identity revolution and evolution: Reflections on being an Asian-American in the U.S.” and also performed Asian dances with other dancers to further illustrate the richness of Asian culture ###
