KSCO 1080 AM Opens Airwaves to Cabrillo College Students

Supports Broadcast Journalism Education Program

APTOS, CA—Journalism students are taking their broadcast production skills and passion to KSCO 1080 AM this semester, producing a one-hour weekly radio show that will air Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The show will present interview, news, features and other content targeted toward the interests, lifestyles, concerns and issues facing college students and the local community.

“KSCO is eager to open doors of opportunity to students wishing to explore careers in radio broadcasting,” said David Sheftman, Cabrillo College’s program chair of journalism.  Sheftman worked with KSCO management this summer on a partnership agreement, which places journalism students as interns at KSCO in exchange for facilities usage, airtime and equipment training.

“We are excited and delighted to be working with Cabrillo College on what will be a ground breaking educational and vocational partnership that puts journalism students on air at a real radio station and enhances the airwaves at KSCO,” said Rosemary Chalmers.

Chalmers, program director and host of KSCO’s “Good Morning Monterey Bay”, already knows the wonderful talents that Cabrillo’s broadcast students bring to the station.  Last semester, journalism student Alice Vecchiola, upon completing Cabrillo’s radio broadcast course, JOURN 35, began working at KSCO in news production as well as reading hourly newsbreaks on the air.

Vecchiola is among the many students in JOURN 35 who have been on local radio over the last year under the direction of Rachel Anne Goodman, a Peabody award-winning independent radio producer and host of KUSP’s “Talk of the Bay”.  Vecchiola took Goodman’s class in spring 2007 and was so inspired that she sought an internship at KSCO.

Students wishing to be on the radio at KSCO this semester should enroll in JOURN 35, which meets Mondays and Wednesdays on the Aptos campus from 9:30-11:00 am in room 512.  Visit: http://www.cabrillo.edu/publications/schedule/current/departments/journ.pdf for more information.
