ADAPTIVE AND INTEGRATED DANCE TRAINING AT CABRILLO ALLOWS DANCING FOR EVERYONE
Dance For All! - October 4 & 5 at the Cabrillo College Dance Studio

APTOS, CA— Cabrillo College Dance Department will host Dance for All!, a cutting edge dance training event, the first of its kind in Santa Cruz, showcasing current developments in the field of adaptive and integrated dance.

Integrated dance brings together dancers with disabilities and non-disabled performers in both classes and performances. Adaptive dance refers to classes and choreography for and  by differently-abled students. Both adaptive and integrated approaches to dance are relatively new in the USA, even though they are well-established and funded in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Dance for All! is a continuation of artistic work by Cabrillo College Dance Department faculty member Sharon Took-Zozaya. Sharon, who organized the upcoming training event, started this work during her fourteen years residing in Scotland, where she taught and ‘made’ dances. “The idea of ‘making’ or creating dances for all members of a community is just starting to emerge into a wider public awareness in the Bay Area,” says Took-Zozaya, “and Cabrillo College is one of the organizations at the forefront of that growth.” Dance for All! is supported by a Cabrillo Foundation Faculty Grant for Student Success.

The Dance for All! Training not only offers students experience and skill development in adaptive and integrated dance, but will also provide an in-service training opportunity for school teachers, support staff and dance artists who would like to learn techniques and processes to include in their teaching. The two-day event will feature practical and experiential workshops, discussion panels, and information sessions by guest presenters including AXIS Dance Company; Eric Kupers, Director of the Mixed Ability Dance Program at CSU East Bay; Ruth Fisher, Director of Dancenter; and Cabrillo faculty members, as well as videos and informal performances.

This event is open to everyone, including college and high school students with and without disabilities, K-12 teachers, dance artists, and the general public.  This event is free to Cabrillo College students, faculty and staff, and students enrolled in K-12 education. Admission for all others is $20 for the 2 days, and will be collected at the door.

Advance reservations are recommended due to limited space, even for those who don’t have to pay. Reservations will be held until 15 minutes before each event.
