Cabrillo College Music Instructors Conduct Premiere at Monterey Jazz Festival
8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Festival Arena/Lyons Stage

APTOS, CA—Cabrillo College music instructors Ray and Susan C. Brown will be steering The Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra at this year’s 50th anniversary celebration of the Monterey Jazz Festival, September 22, at the festival arena/Lyons stage.

The MJF Chamber Orchestrahas been performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival for thirteen years, featuring some of the finest musicians in the Bay Area. This year, under music director/concertmaster Susan C. Brown and conductor Ray Brown, the group will perform with the Terence Blanchard Quintet, the world premiere of Blanchard’sRequiem for Katrina.

Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard was born in New Orleans and was one of the fire-tempered "Young Lions" of the early ‘80s. Blanchard has been on the cutting edge of the resurgence of hard-bop and other modern jazz styles for his entire adult life. With a deeply soulful sound rooted in the blues, but accepting of sonic innovations of the 1960s and beyond, Blanchard's creative musical voice has been described as "profound" and multi-dimensional, stretching the limits and definition of what musical expression--both inside and outside of jazz--can be.

MJF Chamber Orchestra first performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1994, performing  an original commission with pianist Billy Childs. Subsequent performances included Charlie Haden and Quartet West in 1997, Terrence Blanchard’s Music in Film in 1999 and Roy Hargrove and quintet in 2000. The Monterey Jazz Festival Chamber Orchestra recorded the CD, Roy Hargrove with Strings, Moment To Moment, released by Verve in 2000. In 2002 MJFCO re-united with jazz greats Charlie Haden and Michael Brecker and in 2003 performed the commissioned work, Monterey Suite by Ralph Towner with Gary Burton and Oregon.
