Press Releases 2007 CONTACT: Mary Planding, Marketing & Communications
Record Fall Enrollments at Cabrillo College APTOS, CA—Cabrillo College President Brian King announced today that Cabrillo has broken its previous fall enrollment records—14,877 students registered for the fall 2007 semester, the largest number of students to ever register at the college. Enrollment is up 6.4% in headcount and 5.1% in full-time equivalent students (FTES) compared to this time last fall. “Cabrillo’s response to our recent enrollment challenges has truly been a team effort and this wonderful news is an excellent reflection on how our entire college community has worked together to meet the needs of our students and our community. From our first contact with students to their first day in class to the celebration of graduation, our commitment to our students is making a difference in their lives,” stated King. Enrollment is strong across all of Cabrillo’s locations—Aptos, Scotts Valley and Watsonville. Subject areas experiencing the biggest growth are business, accounting, computer applications and business technology, English, Italian, studio art, art history, music, physical education, horticulture, mathematics, communication studies, sociology, psychology and anthropology. The college has recently been able to hire additional instructors and to schedule classes at more desirable times in response to community needs. The college attributes growth to a combination of the outreach and marketing efforts of all faculty and staff along with the drop in fees earlier this year to $20 per unit from $26, the 2007 high school graduating classes being of record size and Santa Cruz County’s slight population growth of approximately .4%. Community colleges across the state are also experiencing increases in headcount and FTES.
