Cabrillo College Theatre Arts Delivers California Premiere for Fall Production
Naomi Iizuka’s Anon(ymous) Plays November 2-18

APTOS, CA— The Cabrillo College Theatre Arts Department’s fall production is a California premiere of the new play Anon(ymous) by Naomi IizukaAnon(ymous), a unique modern day adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, tells a timeless and riveting tale of a refugee’s plight.  Opening on November 2, the play runs through November 18, in the Cabrillo Theater.

Anon(ymous) is a startling off-the-wall theatrical journey into a new American life. There are millions of refugees on the planet today, more than any other time in human history. Escaping war and persecution, refugees leave their countries, their belongings and often their identities behind to live uncertain, invisible lives in unfamiliar places.  The play’s themes ask you to imagine having no identity, feeling as if your life up until now was practically erased.

The California Premiere of Anon(ymous)will be directed by Robin Aronson, set design by Skip Epperson, costumes by Maria Crush, and boasts an original musical score by Cabrillo College music professor Michael Strunk, who directs the Cabrillo Latin Music Ensemble.

This innovative adaptation of The Odyssey is by award-winning dramatist Naomi Iizuka, who was commissioned to write Anon(ymous)  for the The Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis, where it premiered in April 2006. Iizuka's works often have a non-linear storyline and are influenced by her multicultural background.

Anon(ymous) is the tale of a young Southeast Asian refugee called Anon. Anon is a contemporary Odysseus from Homer's epic tale, who also enters a country by being swept ashore, having survived a boat crash. But Anon's destination is the U.S. and the time is as now. Like Odysseus, Anon must live by his wits, his instincts, and constantly call upon his fortitude – and humor – to survive.  The lyrical tale is unflinching in its gritty determination to come at you with the absurdities of life. Anon ricochets off one chaotic situation, then slams into another. From dumpster diving to talking to ghosts—it's a dream, It's a nightmare, It's life—It's the stuff of epic adventures and real ones.
